If TV forum represents a cross section of the kind of nutters that are out there , talking to strangers might prove a potentially unpleasant experience. Why take the risk.

In a village or small town, there will be few farangs. Deliberately ignoring another farang, is not the same as disregarding countrymen at home.

It's just a nod and a smile to acknowledge that we are farangs in a foreign country, and need go no further.

 

I guarantee, however, that a farang will not studiously ignore a beautiful woman of any origin.

Why is it racist to greet someone, if you really want to do so, in the only language that you speak?  It is  racist to assume that you know an individual's nationality simply by looking at them and then trying to speak in what you presume to be their language!

Hi is a fairly common greeting in many languages; except Japan where I am assured it means 'yes', and in Hong Kong (depending on tone used) can mean 'c**t'.

People tend to ignore these greetings based on the fact that they have been preyed upon in the past by some shyster trying to sell them something, or someone begging money with a vaguely plausible sob story.

I was having a coffee next to the border crossing to Myanmar in Maesai about 2 weeks ago , lots of ferlung wandering about.  One old lady looked my way . I said Sawasdee khap. She stopped walking and asked where I was from , I said England , to which she said " Well speak English then "  Ignorant beatch ! And folk think I am rude when I say In Lotus " Look out Johny Foreigner , hide behind the fresh meat counter " I have heard all the BS I need to over the past 13 years but I am not rude when I hear a polite Hi !

Why would you want to speak to an English speaking person in Thai , when English is both your first language ?

   Are you fluent in Thai , could you hold a conversation in Thai ?

OK here is my story and apologies to those who have heard it but it's been a while:

 

I was walking in Central Park New York City late 1970's on a Sunday when the main road on the west side West Drive was closed to traffic. Walking. Jogging,. Bicycles. In-line skates etc.

 

I was walking south when to my left I saw a couple with a young boy sitting a bit off the road on a bench. I said a big HELLO! without breaking stride and he said a big HELLO! back.
