5,000 Myanmar migrants give New Year alms to 100 monks in Phetchaburi

By The Nation

About 5,000 Myanmar migrants working in Phetchaburi gave alms to 100 Buddhist monks to celebrate their traditional New Year festival, the Thingyan celebration.

The migrants, who work in Phetchaburi’s Khao Yoi district, lined the 1.2-kilometre-long Suwan Damri Road from the public pavilion in the middle of Ban Kluay village in tambon Bang Khem as they waited for the monks’ procession.

They had invited 50 Thai monks and 50 Myanmar monks to collect alms.

The Thingyan celebration of Myanmar people involves water splashing like Thailand’s Songkran celebration and runs from April 12 to 16. Their traditional New Year Day falls on April 17.
