Confusion after claims foreigner bitten by shark in Hua Hin - injuries caused by rocks say doctors

There is enough rubbish dumped in the sea around Thailand He probably stepped on a bag of broken glass and tin cans laying on the seabed. BUT a shark attack sounds better than cutting his foot on rubbish on the seabed .... more sympathy from people too

Thailand has a history of hiding information that might hurt tourist industry.  their was a death from a box jellyfish in lanta and sightings in Phuket. but no warnings have been issued.  i suspect this might be a bull shark..........if you you tube bull shark Thailand you will see......

So many ridiculous posts on this forum. I have studied sharks for 40 years and written many articles about them and given lectures on them in many countries as well as Thailand.  The American navy commissioned me to advise them on shark attacks. I spent two years diving in the gulf of Thailand too. I can can assure every one that was it was not a shark bite for many different reasons, the main one being that it is very consistant to the many cuts and wounds caused by rock and coral that I have witnessed on many occasions. The only confirmed  shark attack in Thailand was  at Siricha in 1924. I have cited the above qualifications so as I can hopefully be spared the usual TV posts  one expects for making an informed statement.

There are plenty of videos on the web of black tips swimming very close to shore and in swarms too and of their bite to the feet. The injury of the OP looks just like one of many photos. I don't see why Thailand should be afraid to admit a shark attack as the sea is their habitat.

Probably a rock shark

That is the answer!

I lived in Palm Bch, Fl., USA for 45 years, diver, fisherman and have seen some shark bites. Rocks don't produce that kind of symmetrical radius of bites. This IS a shark bite. But then look at the odds of a shark bite which is rare to the carnage on the road. Everywhere you go on Earth has its' natural dangers. Accept that when you travel. How many people have been killed by lightning strikes in the years since the last verified  shark bite. I believe the bigger threat of going in the water in Thailand is the daily Raw sewage dumped right next to tourist beaches.

There was also a Bangkok bank manager killed by a shark when swimming in Chonburi in the 70s

Second of your links is plausible of a shark, first one is at best very much in doubt.

Unless this guy was riding an over head height wave and got dumped onto rocks it is highly unlikely that is a rock cut/s. I am a surfer and have bounced off the reef a few times over the years and never have I had injuries anywhere near as nasty as that. And NO that is NOT a box jellyfish, that Tourist had a heart attack.

When did you examine the person's  injuries? All I see is some blood with coagulation.  Shark bites result in tearing and we would expect to see the skin shredded or puncture wounds.  I don't see how you can conclude it was a shark based upon these photos as the extent of injury is not provided.

I don't see any spacing as you describe. I see coagulated blood.

Maybe it was a shark. However, it couldn't be much of  a shark because there is no shredding and no deep puncture wound. Until someone who has examined the  injured party says otherwise, I am going with  an injury due to debris or rocks. There is  metal and  building debris  dumped in that area.

Facts... the enemy of a good anti Thai bash of a cover-up.

only  an objective input. I was  there  and help  the  guy.  He himself, something pulled him,  he himself  believed it to be a shark,  no media asked him any questions.

I don't know  exact spot where  was  swimming but he said it was  deep. I came to him  on the beach about  est. 70-80 meters from the soften rocks. I know the shells  there  are  very sharp, but when  low tide as I seen them they are smaller types.

And his cuts on the photo I promise u they look  good :)

After trying  to cut the very strong blood flow, the blood  cuagluted about.

Before that my memory treat  me like this...

Three huge cuts,  one on top side of the foot looked the worst open see inside the bones, approx. 80 m.m

Under The foot  about same, backside foot wrist approx  100 m.m.

No feeling in three toes, and foot torn The underside of The foot had an unnatural twist towards into itself. Either  cramping or to many broken  bones the muscles pushed it into an unnatural position.

If he was  jumping the cliff?  2 meters up?  Sure. I can not prove  what  he said was  true about  the shark. But I guess nothing  is ruled  out?  I am guessing the Dr.  Are used  to see cliff,  shell cuts,  not so sure  about sharks. No one,  and I mean  no one, even the hospital gain anything to say it was  a shark bite :) :) :)

I have caught massive Tiger sharks, Bull sharks and Hammerhead sharks when fishing in Thai waters, they are around, maybe not in the same numbers today as before.

When ?

Don't take away his five minutes of glory .

Been diving several years and numerous encounters with sharks, never been approached agressive.

I hope he heals quick so he can fantasize and re-tell the story how he was attacked by a Bullshit shark

Here we go folks, they are saying about 10-30 sharks.  Pure mystery  why they hang around here.

This  is taken about 300 m.  From the beach  I as close  eyewitness is very comfortable with my understanding,  yes the guy got shark  bitten!

No gore videos, only  shows the sharks around.

If I didn't know any better I'd say that's a Bull Shark bite.

Yep! A Red Bull shark bite. Sort of drags the victim along for 100 metres and then disappears.

my opinion it was a shark attack . it was an investigative bite by the shark.  how clear is the water around hua hin?  and how hungry was the shark.  i dont think a shark would try for a bite of a snorkeler or diver who could stand off the animal. but the swimmer who is not watching his surroundings.?  possibly..........

Its Def.  Comfirmed now so.

Its  on all big News.

Blacktip reef shark.

Normally  not agressive at all.  That day was windy, water not clear easy for good reason  take a serious  bite by mistake.  His foot was very badly cut.

And remember  that  there  are not one shark around there are like 5-6 at least.

i really think a snorkeler or diver who could stand the animal off would have no worries. i did have a group of black tips circling me while i was snorkeling ko tao recently but as an experienced swimmer you dont exhibit fear energy..........and they will do away.
