All well and good but mine was a one sided conversation with a prison guard and not a point for clarification on Jeremy Paxman show.........Hmmmm maybe there are similarities after all.....

I’d suggest the busybodies are those who prefer to see the negative wherever and whenever they can. Racism is is an ugly trait.

This is the problem. Some people see negatives everywhere, others only positives. How about we just see the reality. Racism and nationalism are alive and well in Thailand... and they can get away with it. They don't have a PC brigade to deal with.

Keep up the good work boys. Jail then deport.

"Surachet said tourist police have joined forces with other police to conduct a search of 3,126 spots nationwide in 23 operations so far and arrested 868 foreigners for violating Thai law.

Surachet said the arrested foreigners were blacklisted and deported."

Even the innocent ones or those with possibly mitigating circumstances??  Yeah Arrest and deport.  No need for wasted court time.??? Foreigners don't deserve that??

Good in  Bad out.  I agree but Justice would be nice to be seen.  Either that or better translation of the original Thai report.  ALLSEEINGEYE's post is very interesting.

I promise you this is not all what it seems. Yes sometimes they are putting some bad guys away and deporting them. But I know first hand that this is a way for the Thais to kidnap and extort money from people in many cases. They did it to me last month.

I did not have an overstay and I was at immigration with a BOI work permit and was on time for my visa extension for a court case I was found not guilty of.

After offering me a 7 day extension the supervisor intervened and cancelled my visa called Lumpini to come and take me away. I thought it was just to sign some paperwork but they threw me in IDC at Suan Plu.

What I saw there was amazing and disgusting. If you treated dogs like that you would be thrown in jail for animal cruelty. You can find lots more info on this from a search of IDC Thailand.

There are children and families in there which is against international law. As Thailand joined the UNHRC last year they are supposed to be transparent but no one sees inside this horrible place.

As for me they threatened to blacklist me for 5 years. They locked me up for 5 days and then let me out as soon as I payed for my plane ticket out, which must be done at the travel agent at Suan Plu immigration. A 1 way ticket to Vancouver ran me 63,500 baht (I paid less then 19,000 to return).

I had no blacklist, there was no problem with me returning. This is just an incredibly nasty scam they are running.

I met many people that had 2 days overstay and were either at immigration or the airport voluntarily but were arrested anyway. Many were there between 30 days to 4 months as they could not arrange plane tickets out.

No words can describe what a horror show this place is with severe overcrowding etc etc etc. Many people I met have been there for several years and 1 guy for 10 years.

The world needs to know about this place.

Call a reputable newspaper and speak with them. Call more than one if you are ignored. If half of what you say is true then it should be reported to some news entity that can investigate and do something about it.

I cannot agree with the maths in this post.

It is a multi trillion dollar industry. That's a lot of dosh.

We are talking about decades here.

It has been the backbone of the Thai economy.

From fake goods to prostitutes to drugs to illegal businesses to payoffs and under the table money. Yes, trillions of dollars might be an underestimate.

Perhaps the world needs to know, but past experience would indicate that nothing will be done. As long as Thailand plays ball with the US and UK and the corporate power structure, they will be allowed to continue abusing both citizens and foreigners.

You missed it in his story, he was extended a 7 day extension due to a court case! So there was no reason for extra extension, as he states he was found not guilty. So no need for him to stay. Bye bye! But, he probably upset them. and not a real Canadian maybe , writes like an Indian?

Struck me that he is not a native speaker.  'Then'   and 'than' have two totally different meanings.

"Who' refers to people, 'that' to objects.

I was in there for 3 weeks in '97 I think it was. So many things I could say but won't... I guess the worst thing was the prison guard that called out detainees' names that were due to be released. My nickname became "England" and every other day he would yell out "England!" so I picked up my shoes ( with hidden boiled eggs in) then make my way to the cell door....Then he'd say "England's Prime Minister is Tony Blair" or "England's captain is David Beckham" before bursting into laughter and making me walk back to my 3 allocated floor tiles... A truly <deleted> awful place ...

if you dont mind me asking, what did you do to end up there in 97'?

Foreign countries that import goods from Thailand have to pay for them in Thai Baht.

Where do you get this idea??

We export from Thailand and all our invoices are in USD.  I have several Thai friends that own companies exporting everything is in USD.  When we get a wire transfer we can have it put in our USD account or our Thai baht account (which the bank dose the exchange at the current rate).

Thailand got so strictly normal these days.

At the end of the day, it is the blackmarket that has driven the Thai economy since always. It is a multi trillion dollar industry. Time will tell if thai economy can flourish without it. I'm not optimistic that it can.

smart comment and true. There's not a great deal to offer in the mainstream. it's the bend and stretch punters liked

Blacklisted and deported, though the majority had entered the country, illegally... so blacklisting does nothing since they didn't need a valid passport to enter to begin with?  Seems like a silly way to handle the situation.

I was being a naughty little boy in Patpong and got lifted (which was all sorted out) - but then I was taken to IDC because I didn't have my passport with me...It took 3 weeks for the Embassy to enter my apartment and get it back to show I was legal...

And rice, genuine tourism contributes nothing?

Most of the knock-offs come from China.

Good guys in, bad guys out is something other countries should do, like not selling off the land and companies to foreigners.

:shock1:

Just how many of those tourists come to thailand for sex. Sex and the seedier is the biggest tourist drawcard. Fake products were a huge tourist draw,I remember the saying "buy a suitcase there, fill it up with brand names" so cheap. Thousands of tourists flock to the drug infested full moon party every year. All those retirees come here for the women, "sex pats " comes to mind. As the Thais are finding out, large quantities of Chinese families, does not equate to large quantities of revenue. They can buy everything cheaper in China. They spend little, but put a huge burden on the infrastructure. People that make money on the blackmarket and live on the fringes of the blackmarket, spend spend spend. If you have visited even 1 bar with girls selling themselves, or bought 1 item that is fake or taken 1 viagra that is generic, then you would be one of millions contributing to blackmarket. You should be deported bad guy out .

You seem to have chosen very bigoted Canadians for friends as that is not the prevailing attitude amongst most of us.

Very common for native speakers to have poor written grammar.

Look at all the "should of" and "could of" on this forum.

Choosing Soi Cowboy and obviously, Nana for this media release needed the exposure of a different kind, not much name and shame in this one, must all be neighbouring countries
