A truck spilled two tonnes of recyclable glass bottles onto a road in Ayutthaya's Bang Pahan district early on Tuesday, causing major traffic congestion.

The accident happened at 3.20am on the Bangkok-bound Asia highway at kilometre marker No 31-32 in Tambon Pho Samton.

The glass was spread over the road for about a kilometre, blocking three lanes of the four-lane road and causing a two kilometre traffic jam.

The truck driver, Sumet Samathimongkol, 29, said a lock of the back door of the truck slipped off, causing the door of the container to open and the glass to spill out. He said he was delivering 16 tonnes of glass to a recycle factory in Ayutthaya.

He was fined Bt500 and his employer will be billed for the cost of the clean-up, police said.

The highway office in Ayutthaya cleaned the road and a fire engine washed the road. Traffic resumed to normal at 5.30am after the clean-up.

That's a very lame excuse.

They'll both be shattered by that!
