Three young cousins drowned when a motorcycle and sidecar fell into a roadside pond in Sa Kaew’s Watana Nakhon district on Monday evening.

About 100 villagers and relatives of the family gathered at the public utility pavilion of Moo 8 village in Tammbon Phakkha at 10am Tuesday to help the family prepare for the funeral rite.

The three boys – identified as Wuthichai Champhanit, 13, Thirapat Buplab, 8, and Waranthorn Rupklom, 3 – were cousins living in the same house in the village.

They drowned after the motorcycle, driven by the eldest boy, they borrowed from a neighbour lost control and rode into the pond.

The neighbour said the boys wanted to visit their grandfather to give him some mangoes they had collected.

Local villagers said they were shocked to learn about the tragic incident as the three boys were well loved by their neighbours.

Suriya Rupklom, father of Waranthorn, said he was shocked to hear about the incident, as he only had one child.

Incredibly sad, and the second incident in a day of 3 boys drowning at the same time.

Some will question why a 13 year old was riding the bike.

I question why there is no national programme to teach kids to swim?

There are far too many drowning tragedies in Thailand, yet I am not aware of any measures to stop it continuing.

RIP little fellas.
