Get Real
Yes, off course it must be much more bad for the people that should have been living without owning things, to suddenly find themselfs in that particular situation, than it is for ordinarie people. His harem were there in tears, their idol (or is it 'idle') has been arrested. I used to think the word gullible had been removed from the dictionary. Now I know it hasn't. Will Suvit Thongprasert (real name of the accused) be charged with crimes against the gullible? I don't see why not, the police/junta get away with making up non-existent charges against the sandwich-eating public. Don't forget it was the founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard who is widely rumoured to have said "The way to make a million dollars is to start a religion." Which is exactly what he did. Suvit Thongprasert isn't far behind by brainwashing being charismatic and encouraging his followers under the vague guise of Buddhism.

connda
No sympathy here considering that I don't believe that Buddhist monks should be activists - Political activism in anathema to the purpose of rejecting worldly concern and pursuing a spiritual path. They can not co-exist. Pick one or the other - want to be an activist? Disrobe. If he wasn't a monk, his arrest would gander little if no media coverage. Best of luck as a layman. He was one of the most prominent Orwellian-named PDRC leaders, so a little more than just any activist. Then there was unlawful imprisonment and beating of 2 undercover police offers and robbery of 120,000 Baht at a hotel (they threatened to ransack the place unless this money was paid). If he really wanted to milk public sympathy, he should have been fully dressed and seated in front of a statue of Buddha in peaceful meditation. But instead -- he's found sleeping in the middle of the day in a squalid room that looks in desperate need of cleaning. There we go - the hero of the laity pursuing spirituality in the prone position. Zzzz Zzzz Zzzz. Well, back to being a non-monk, and an incarcerated one at that. I detest when charlatans dress in the robes of the spiritual in order to advance their own causes. It's disingenuous. And it further debases the already tarnished institution of the Thai Buddhist monastic order.

If they spent more time meditating a less time pursuing worldly endeavors, then no doubt they would be sleeping like babes. But had they done that, they would not be in prison in the first place. Boo hoo. Ejecting these charlatans out of the Sangha is a step in the right direction. There are a whole lot more that should be forced to take that same path. A true Buddhist monk would not have been arrested while sleeping on a 'high, comfortable' bed which is strictly forbidden by the vows taken by what is suppose to be a 'senior' Buddhist monk. So, yes, it's wonderfully karmatic in the sense that he is now living in the austerity that Buddhist monks vow to live in, but he seems to be rather averse to that lifestyle. <laugh> What goes around comes around. How fitting!!!
