A dramatic rescue of a German tourist in Koh Phangan yesterday. The man remains in a coma.

77Jowo is reporting that a 47 year old German tourist on holiday with his family was in hospital in a coma after a dramatic rescue at Nai Han Yai beach on Koh Phangan yesterday afternoon.

Witnesses said that Heyros Jochen (name transliterated from Thai) had entered heavy seas at the beach where a red warning flag was flying.

Jochen, that wasn't a good move. Werd schnell wieder gesund. Get well soon and next time don't swim where red flags are. They're there for a reason.

He is German. He is an expert. Perhaps he saw the red flag and chuckled at the  quaint Thai custom of adorning their beach with a colourful flag?

Red flags, high waves- pfffft. His survival instinct didn't get further than: Do not reach into the running machine!

The sea is calm now, no red flags, this story is from January 12th.
