Are we struggling a bit with I D'ing the bike in 1694# .? as the silence is deafening ( apart from KTMjeff ) .. c'mon chaps a clue is in the engine .. It was the greatest, bestest, prettiest, and fastest bike in the whole of East Anglia circa 1983-1990. I have a large Norton N and his name and dates tattooed on me in memory. His nickname was Rhino and he was a legend. And i miss him dearly since his death in August 95 on his Fast as F##k FXR Harley. Most W C JAP engines found their way into Morgan's .. Some more OEC's .. 500 single .. 350 using same Rudge 4 valve head as the HRD a few pages back .. Well spotted KTM indeed it looks like the Aprilia Cube Motogp lump from the early 2000's that V N put up .. It may well have been the first bike on the grid with pneumatic valves though Yamaha were experimenting with that about the same time .. The head was co-developed by Engine builders par excellence Cosworth .. From what I recall because it was a 3 pot it could run a lower minimum weight than the 4 banger Yamaha's and 5 cyl Honda's .. About 235/240 hp but not enough against the Japanese and then the Ducati's when they joined Motogp .. And another bit of superb Brit' engineering the immense 3.5 DFV Cosworth F1 lump .. Mid 60's in development 400'ish HP .. by early 80's up near 500 and more with a turbo like the A-mericans did to it in Indy racing and still reliable with it .. Used by numerous F1 teams as the engine of choice .. AN OEC (Osborne Engineering Company) Jap had set a new speed record of 130.32 mph in August 1930, only to have BMW break it, by 0.3 mph, in September, so the Brits retuned and streamlined the bike, and had another crack at it in December. The OEC broke its drive sprocket on the first run, but they had a Zenith Jap on hand - same engine, different bike brand, as a backup, and it successfully set a new record with the same rider, and became the first bike to officially exceed 150 mph when it did 150.7. Zenith were going out of business (though they were later briefly resurrected), so, for national pride, and the chance to advertise a bike still in production with the title of world speed record holder, it was agreed to announce that the OEC was the record breaker, with even the official FIM time keepers going along with it. Streamlining in 1930. The Zenith Jap that set the new absolute speed record of 150.7 mph The OEC that was claimed to have achieved the record. Love the streamlined helmet and the knitwear racing suit. I like it too, but those beach bars will limit it's cruising or fast touring speed. I had them on my Guz till this year. So nearly 20 years of riding everywhere with 39" or 1 metre wide bars. Great when i was younger inc down to Italy twice via the Alps, but now in my, er, later age they give me arse ache long distance and especially so at 80 mph all day, 130 ish in new money. Ilmor are another British engineering who have big influence in various forms of Motorsport .. Builders of the McLaren F1 team's engines back in the 90's early 00's they also built their own Motogp bike in 2006 for the revised 800cc capacity .. Motogp being the expensive strand of bike racing that it is seen them last not 2 seasons but credit where its due for taking the plunge into the top class .. They brought the bike to Goodwood's Festival of Speed 2007 when me and me mate Dean were there where you could see ( within a couple of feet .. back then it was always quite relaxed to get up close with some of the kit on show ) and hear them running in the pit area before they blasted off up the hill for their timed runs .. 4 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The OEC/JAP bike had some links to the company Anzani. Was it by the frane , or forks. Those "girder/pylon" forks made me think of Anzani. Tha Aprilia Cube , back in 2000 , gave 240 BHP , but had a savage delivery that couldnt be tamed with the electronics/gyroscopes of the day. Cosworth are an incredible company , having a hand in the Aprilia/Rotax engine of my RSV 1000 Factory , and helped get 400 BHP , and 800 torque , from the last version of the 6.75 L Bentley engine. 4 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
