Outgoing Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn, who has been playing a key role in the search and rescue mission to save the 12 young footballers and their coach trapped in Tham Luang cave since June 23,  bid farewell today to his colleagues and residents of the province. His transfer to Pyayao province was formallyl announced  in the Royal Gazette on Wednesday.

However, Interior Permanent Secretary Chatchai Promlert has issued a ministerial order for him to carry on with his job to oversee the rescue operation until the mission to extract the 12-member Wild Boar football team and their coach out of the flooded cave is accomplished or until new changes are ordered.

In a Line Application post, Mr Narongsak told his colleagues that the past 15 months of his governorship in Chiang Rai would always be remembered.  He said he was proud to have worked with them, especially during the time of crisis.

Being transferred after only 15 months , is there a reason for such a short term (good or bad) .

Ther reason is bad.

Mr Narongsak withheld approval for several projects he suspected of inflated prices i.e. corruption.

One of these was the 32-million-baht construction of a Phaya Mung Rai statue on an island in the Kok River.

Narongsakr had said the budget allocated for this, proposed by Chiang Mai Municipality, and other schemes suspected of corruption, should instead be spent on important infrastructure improvements.

Those in collusion with corrupt companies wanted him out, which they have achieved, but they hadn't reckoned on his sudden fame with the Tham Luang cave crisis.

I hope he resigns from government service and joins the Future Forward party. He is just the sort of man they need.

Knowledgable with 4 degrees from engineering to public administration and a masters in survey engineering and geographic information from Ohio University, and possessor of a character known for honesty, integrity and bravery.

Yes these are the kind of people we need, those that are not afraid to stop corruption. Would be nice if he joined future forward.

He got raw deal from Prayut who obviously got influenced by others to remove him.

You are right. He has been good for the City and the Province in his year + in post. In the last couple of weeks he has been a good leader.

As for being just what "Future Forward" need, perhaps, but he is just what Provincial Government needs.

Phayao have struck lucky...
