PHUKET, 10th July 2018 (NNT) – The Governor of Phuket has indicated two people are still missing after a boat sank in the province’s waters last Thursday and that authorities from Krabi, Phangnga and Trang have joined in the search and rescue operation.

Phuket Governor Noraphat Plodthong, Royal Thai Navy Region 3 Commander Vice Adm Somnuek Prempramote, Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Theerapong Thipcharoen, Military Circle 65 Chief of Staff Col Santi Sakuntanak, Phuket Public Health Official Dr. Jiraphan Tephan and Zhou Guangxi of the Chinese Consulate jointly announced progress in the operation to find victims of the boat accident off the coast of Phuket from the command center set up to handle the matter.

The governor reported two more people are still being sought after the Chinese government confirmed that another three who were scheduled to board the boat had not boarded and instead had returned home. Two bodies were earlier found between Koh Kai and Koh Mai Ton and have been sent to Vajira Phuket Hospital for identification, with another body currently being brought back to land and a final body yet to be extracted from the boat’s wreckage. Royal Thai Navy and Chinese authorities are still plotting the operation to retrieve the last body due to high waves becoming a concern for rescue workers.

Officials from Krabi, Phangnga and Trang have joined the effort to find the other two passengers with assessments indicating they likely drifted towards one of the three provinces. Fishermen have been told about the two missing people and that they should report any sightings to authorities.

Retrieval of the sunken boat has yet to take place due to legal concerns.

Of the total 37 bodies found so far, only four have yet to be identified and families have requested return of the remaining 33. Nonetheless, a center to coordinate religious ceremonies has been established for those who may wish to hold funeral proceedings in Phuket.

Officials have assured families of the missing that search operations will not conclude until all victims of the boat accident are found.
