Man arrested with knives near UK parliament jailed for life

LONDON (Reuters) - A British man who had made bombs for the Taliban in Afghanistan and was plotting an attack near London's parliament was jailed for life with a minimum term of 40 years at the Old Bailey court on Friday.

Khalid Ali, 28, was carrying three knives when he was arrested by armed police in April last year.

Only just over a month earlier, a British-born convert to Islam had ploughed a car into pedestrians on nearby Westminster Bridge, killing four people, before stabbing a policeman to death in the grounds of parliament.

Ali had intended to kill a police officer, a member of the armed forces or even a Member of Parliament, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

Five days before he was stopped, Ali visited potential targets such as Westminster Bridge, the Houses of Parliament and Whitehall.

His fingerprints matched those found on bomb-making components recovered in Afghanistan in 2012 and held on an FBI database, the CPS said in a statement.

Some of the prints were on the sticky side of adhesive tape used in their manufacture which the prosecution argued indicated he had made the devices and was not merely handling them.

"Khalid Ali planned to carry out a vicious knife attack in London that could have injured many and endangered life," said Sue Hemming from the CPS.

From Khalid Ali: Westminster plot bomb-maker jailed for life

Quote

On 22 April last year - one month after the Westminster (Bridge) terror attack - Ali was seen on CCTV walking past a number of high profile locations in central London, including the MI6 building, Westminster Bridge, the Houses of Parliament and Whitehall.

Five days later, his mother called police and said she had found four knives in his bedroom.

He was arrested later that day, just metres from Downing Street.

It must be very hard for a mother to report her son to the police; but by so doing she showed the respect and support for the law and security forces together with the total lack of support for Islamist terrorism common amongst the vast majority of British Muslims.

Good news

Not really. He  will be incarcerated for a few years and allowed to continue his subversive treasonous acts  in HM prisons radicalizing and terrorizing other inmates. His rights to  "pray" aka engage in treasonous acts under the guise of religious rights  will be protected by the likes of Corbyn and others who will argue that he is a misunderstood fine fellow. In the meantime the shrinking number of . UK taxpayers will be stuck paying for his stay.

My view is that a public execution of a traitor was merited.

A good example of "open borders". Now this piece of s.... calls himself British. They should have listened to Enoch Powell.

Enoch Powell wanted to expel so many people including the Jews. They generally are not trouble makers and are makers of money which is good for society.

A minimum sentence of  40 years equates to a few years?. However given the guy's admission to his activities in Afghanistan I would have thought a life sentence without parole would have been handed down; I presume some legal issues were in play.

As you probably know UK doesn't have capital punishment. In any case the punishment you wish for is totally inappropriate - just as barbaric as the enemy.

So why didn't he use a bomb?

Hopefully the prosecutors had more evidence than the unsubstantiated, opinions quoted!

There’s such a thing as healthy skepticism.

And then there’s the other sort.

Try getting the ingredients for a bomb in the UK these days. It isn't easy to blow things up like we did when we were kids, substances banned and fire retardants added. There is a reason why they have to resort to knives or vehicles.
