snoop1130
Around 240 small hotel businesses in Krabi shut down for having no licences By The Nation The authorities have checked and closed 239 small hotels, hostels and guest houses in Krabi's Mueang district during the past month for having no licences for the provision of hotel services. Krabi deputy governor Apinan Puekphong on Tuesday said police, troops, provincial and municipality officials had joined forces to check hotel services in the district and found that only 52 out of 318 places inspected had licences for operating such services. He said 239 had been temporarily shut down pending their licence applications. To get a licence, the owners must comply with the hotel business law to provide proper safety measures for guests, he added. The owners of the 239 illegal hotel businesses have been sued for contravening the law, with 199 of them already having been convicted and the rest still being tried, the deputy governor said. No, they are determined to eradicate all these unlicensed and overpriced death-traps that offer no security or safety to guests, in favour of proper hotels. I'm all for it. Just look at that photo: I wouldn't keep a dog in such a place.
siamcrut
It’s about time for that cleanup! Now do the same with restaurants in tourist areas. For those who want to continue their small business, apply for a license and follow the requirements. Ain’t that hard.

sam neuts
The government requires FULL compliance by 2021. The 2016 amendment to the Hotel Act has already closed many businesses and with a Hotel Licence virtually impossible to obtain this will soon affect thousands of travellers and businesses. Nothing to do with safety when the same premises they are closing for no licence can rent for 30 day minimum, without a licence.

dpspike
Good people of Thaivisa.com, don't be fooled by the propaganda. The government is closing down all types of small hotels all over Thailand. It's already happened in Chiang Mai. The truth is that certain "health and safety" requirements for the hotel license, such as greenspace and parking, don't have any impact on actual customer safety. The regulations are written to favor big 4 & 5 star operations. So yes, the price is going up in Thailand because those hotels that can meet the license requirements aren't going to book rooms for 1000 baht per night. Funny, I haven't heard anything about this happening in Bangkok. Personally, I believe that many of the small hotels being shut down will actually be able to continue operations after agreeing to pay an increased monthly "tax" to the local authorities. But then again, I'm a glass is half-empty kind of guy.

ChiangMaiLightning2143
What normal country had guesthouses with no licenses no insurance? A business with properly licensed and insured facilities has no reason to bribe officials and local cops, a step in the elimination of corruption! Yes, some of the "charm" of staying in a third world dump will go too, it is called progress. The next destination will always beckon the adventurous.. Africa anybody? Thailand should attract a higher quality of tourist who won't tolerate such accommodations not odorous backpackers, and prostitution Dross!
