Thailand will back Myanmar’s plan to introduce mobile medical services in impoverished Rakhine State.

“We will provide doctors and medical equipment,” Thai Public Health Minister Dr Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said after emerging from a bilateral meeting in Yangon, where they discussed a work plan covering 2018-2021.

The health minister said Thailand had both short-term and long-term measures planned.

In the short term, Thai doctors will collaborate with their Myanmar counterparts to set up mobile medical service teams for Rakhine.

“We will be pleased to provide specialists such as ophthalmologists and otolaryngologists [physicians trained in the treatment and surgery of the ear, nose and throat],” Piyasakol said. “These specialists will provide treatment at Rakhine-based hospitals when requested.”

The minister added that services should start soon because some preparations have already been completed.

“As for long-term measures, we will develop a system and provide human resources for the delivery of medical services,” he said.

At the meeting, Thailand and Myanmar approved a work plan on public-health cooperation to be implemented between 2019 and 2021. The meeting was held on Friday.

The cooperation will cover the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, the promotion of food and drug safety, lab work and infection control, development of human resources for the healthcare sector, health promotion and the development of healthcare services for migrants.
