In the Nordic or French model, selling sex is legal but buying it or running a brothel is prohibited.

Let me guess....this mental gymnastics is simply to circumvent some other law but essentially says "We say prostitution is legal but it really isn't you <deleted>", am I missing something here?

Thailand and prostitution only have the dubious reputation because of dirty old western men.

It is ironic on here that so many moralise and bleat about it.

So by your description  "dirty old western man" you are confirming that you are no better than the other moralists on TV.   Explain what is "dirty " about western men  coming to Thailand for sexual services rather than  paying for sexual services in the West ?

Or do you mean when they come to a hot dusty climate they shower insufficiently and hence unclean ?

Or , is it , as I suspect,  you consider that to come to Thailand for those services they are in some way are tainted ? If so you are not only a moralist but also a hypocrite to use such labels and complain about other posters.

"Dirty old western men" may be a small part of what is essentially the icing on a massive Thai cake. Tens of thousands of younger men aged between 20 and 50 visit Thailand for the beaches, beer and  babes.

Meanwhile the bulk of the cake is made up of millions of Thai men who regularly use and sometimes abuse prostitutes in every city, town and village in Thailand. Anyone in the outside world remotely interested in this subject will already know this.

The "dubious reputation" is  proudly created by the Thais themselves. They should be more ashamed of the massive corruption and the fact that they can't run a democracy.

Making bizarre announcements such as the recent "There is no prostitution on Walking Street, Pattaya", merely adds to the confusion.

I'm quite happy to be accused of being slow on the uptake, but I fail to see the difference between sex worker and prostitute. When you pay someone for sex, even privately, then that person is a prostitute, and prostitution is illegal in Thailand, is it not? I also don't see where bar fines come into it - it's money paid to the bar, not the sex worker. It's the remuneration you pay the sex worker for sexual services that is the deal breaker - it's why escorts overseas always state in their adverts that money is to be put in an envelope by the client and left in an obvious place for the lady to pick up, thereby getting around the law of money directly changing hands for sexual services rendered.
Sex worker = someone who works in the sex industry

Prostitute = someone who has sex for money

Prostitution is not illegal in Thailand - aspects of it are, but not all of it. This is similar in other countries such as the UK.

Hope this helps.

As farangs, we get shafted by all thai folk. Just check the double pricing. You can get a good rogering at the markets, national parks, waterfall parks and even at hospitals.

This truly is a eFing good place to be rogered every day by every body here. I. E. Double pricing even by the fines issued by the little brown boys in skin tight uniforms.

Girls go into the trade having been abandoned by a Thai husband with no paternity gene.  Making absent fathers pay for their offspring's education/food/childcare would cut down the supply.  The police have a vested interest in keeping this trade illegal so the law will never get past this powerful lobby,

Girls go into the trade for money.  Make no bones (pun intended) about it.

Thats an underestimate,  prostitution reaches to all for corners of the country with karaokes, bars and on line prostitution ...guesstimate more likely 12 million if you include males and freelances

It's a fine line between "buying" and "procuring". In the story graphic referring to Thailand, it says, "Buying sex is not illegal if the sex worker is over 18 years of age". It then says, "Selling sex and procuring  prostitutes are illegal". Confusing? Sure is.

Apparently, they are referring to procuring women to work as prostitutes--e.g., sex trafficking; bringing girls in from the provinces to work in the sex industry--as opposed to buying sex as a customer--e.g., a short time.

Can't see why registration is necessary, is it necessary for other types of worker to register their occupation?

Of course it is, do you think that when a worker is registered to pay tax the occupation isn't registered also?

Do you think that when a company is registered the type of business and jobs of employees are not recorded?

Nobody,nobody can stop prostitution.

And surely not "those" who can not even make people wear helmets.

If many people like "something "....your business will flourish .

80% of the internet downloading is porn .

Type "porn" in your browser and click on "images" or "video"...... the most successful word of the internet .

Off Course there are some hypocrites who are against, but who cares.

And if my daughter wants to be a prostitute.... ok,better than a lawyer.

Thailand’s population is approximately 69 million.  However, only about 60%, or 42 million, are between the ages of 15 and 54 years of age (https://www.indexmundi.com/thailand/age_structure.html)

Granted, there are some prostitutes under 15 and some over 54. However, let’s call it even since those outliers are likely surpassed by fewer prostitutes over 40?

So, your 12 million guesstimate would mean about 29% of Thais are prostitutes. That means more than one in four Thais are prostitutes.

Won't happen.

Too many psychotics in charge to see the benefits of facing reality, versus how they dream the garden of Eden should be.

Plus,  too many vested interests would lose out, no money in legal enterprises for parasites.

They'll most likely just choose to additionally criminalise the buyer,  since that means much more opportunity for corruption,  shakedowns, and the rich getting away with everything that nobody else does,  as usual.

Way, way off the mark. I have a friend who ran the leading HIV foundation in Thailand for a decade or more. She was allied with many NGO's and knew all the details. She said 300,000 women involved in prostitution was the correct figure. Now, if you add in all of the freelancing that goes on, I am sure that figure rises. But 2 million is ridiculously high, alarmist, not based on anything resembling a scientific survey, and probably a number pulled out of Little P's butt.

Make prostitution legal. All keeping it illegal does, is to allow the police and the army an additional source of income, and add to the stress level of sex workers here. It accomplishes nothing else. There is a zero deterrent factor.

in thailand a high % of girls that you are dating expect to be compensated.   its a cultural thing

Maybe, if you are pushing the notion that expecting the man to buy dinner is being compensated. If not, then a high percentage of the girls you are dating must be prostitutes.
