Vajiralongkorn Dam speeds up water release, some low-lying flooding expected

Low-lying areas downstream of the Vajiralongkorn Dam in Kanchanaburi may be affected by an increase in the speed of water released from the dam starting on September 4, according to its director.

However, the increased water would not burst the banks of Kwae Noi River in Thong Pha Phum and Muang districts, wrote Waiwist Saengphanit, the dam director, in a letter sent to the Kanchanaburi provincial administration on Friday.

The dam’s water management committee has decided to increase the water release speed to 58 million cubic metres per day from September 4 to 10 in response to ongoing rain and decreasing surplus capacity.

That follows an earlier committee decision to release the water at the speed of 53 million cubic metres per day from August 23 to 27 after the upstream areas of the dam saw heavy rains.

With the rains continuing and the water level behind the dam not reduced by the increased release, the committee extended that release speed until September 3.

But on Thursday the committee saw the need to again increase the speed as the water in the dam’s reservoir had increased to reach 94 per cent of its capacity, the letter explained.
