Beer experts: if I am gonna drink a beer............

I decided I am going to increase my beer consumption as it is good for my kidneys.

 

The beers I  drink back in the USA are Yuengling, Rolling Rock and Alaskan Amber. Usually its impossible to find those beers, so I will get a Sapporo or a Corona or a Dos Equis.

 

Here I have been drinking BeerLao and Chang. Anything else I should try that may float my boat that will NOT break the bank? Im not paying premium prices for regular beer.

If you hang around Bangkok, mostly, then you have a lot of choices, I imagine.

 

Upon moving here, my locally available knock them back beers went:

 

1.  Heineken - I was coming off the middle east, so it was that and a few others.

2.  Singha - briefly.

3.  Sapporo, briefly.

4.  Tiger, for quite a while.

5.  San Mig Light because with lotsa lime, was reminiscent of Corona, kinda.

6.  Leo for quite a long time.

7.  Back on San Mig Light and lime.

8.  Then the Singha Light came out and I've been on that ever since.  

 

Up where I live, we put loads of ice in our glasses, which is something I never did or even heard of before I moved to LoS.   So I don't get too worked up about beer.  It's all piss water and ice anyway. ?

Naw,I was referring to the states. If I found a dos in BKk at a fair price life would be complete

There's pretty good wheat/white beer sold in 1 liter cans for 200 baht.

If you can find Lion Beer from Sri Lanka, it is very nice, especially their Lion Stout - one of the best beers I have tasted in a long time. It's a bit high in alcohol (8.8%) but is really smooth and easy to drink.

Out of all the regular lager beers in Thailand Heineken is best by far IMO. And Tiger is OK too. Chang tastes good but I find it knocks me around too much the following day. Singha goes quite well with Thai food and I think I'd rather drink urine than Leo.

Try "Snowy Weisen". Made here by Boon Rawd thats the owners of Beer Singha. Its a Wheat beer. I by a pack of 12 500cl cans and works out a little less than 47baht a can. 4% alcohol but for me its a million % better than Chang or the like.

Heineken is the best of what is a pretty ordinary selection here and they are all overpriced by Thai standards of income. The only good news recently has been Snowy and Kopper in 7-11 which, although far from perfect, are quite reasonable.

Why are you recommending Lion Beer from Sri Lanka? Have you seen it for sale in Thailand, and if so, is it cheaper than European imports?

I was going to suggest Asahi also, since it's dry (all the local stuff is sweet as heck to me).  If you can find some of the German bottled beers like Erdinger, Warsteiner etc they're decent enough - not as good as their draught counterparts, but that can be said of any brand so far as I can tell.

 

Failing that San Mig Light is a 'safe' (if not inspiring) bottled beer.

That said, I usually can be found with a Leo in front of me because I'm not very adventurous these days.

One thing:  If it really is for your kidneys, then why not water?  If water is too dull then there are some green teas you can drink without guilt such as Oishi Oolong (sugar free).  A nip of vodka would keep the calories 'useful'.

Beer Lao (especially the dark one) is affordable and tastes good.

 

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier tastes a lot better but is also a lot more expensive.

Yes, I thought the same. Whenever  someone says they drink Corona, I know they are not serious beer drinkers. 

And as if it's not watered down enough, they put that stupid lemon in the top to dilute the taste even further

I live near Wishbeer at soi 67, so the world is my oyster. I like Leffe Blonde or a an Asahi if im just walking past a 7/11.

 

The Gunniess in BKK is brewed in Singapore apparently...far to thin. I've had one and that was enough.

I had a Tiger wheat beer while in KL. Pretty decent, but not available in Thailand.

It's such a shame that the 'Beer' being discussed is in fact all Lager and that there has been no mention of any proper beer:  Bitter, Mild or any like variant.  I am usually offered a "Beer" and express my yearning for a Beer and not for one of the pressure filtered, gassy, chemically laced Lagers.  No matter how many times you point out that clearly there isn't any beer, it doesn't seem to make any difference.  Quite a few countries have laws about what beer is and what it may contain so you'd think that would be common knowledge.

 

As I haven't found any 'Beer' yet in Thailand it could be that I've been looking in the wrong places and that it's a specialist item.  Does anyone know where you can get proper beers and its trade names?
