If you hang around Bangkok, mostly, then you have a lot of choices, I imagine.

Upon moving here, my locally available knock them back beers went:

1.  Heineken - I was coming off the middle east, so it was that and a few others.

2.  Singha - briefly.

3.  Sapporo, briefly.

4.  Tiger, for quite a while.

5.  San Mig Light because with lotsa lime, was reminiscent of Corona, kinda.

6.  Leo for quite a long time.

7.  Back on San Mig Light and lime.

8.  Then the Singha Light came out and I've been on that ever since.

Up where I live, we put loads of ice in our glasses, which is something I never did or even heard of before I moved to LoS.   So I don't get too worked up about beer.  It's all piss water and ice anyway. ?

Chang has always been dishwater, and it never goes off, a bad sign. Leo goes off after about 4 weeks, good sign - no preservatives Check Fill Date (dd-mm-yy). It's best after 7-15 days, the yeast has done its job and the smell of hops is sweet, bite to the tongue. Too early, it's only fizzy, after a month it's like licking a copper bath tub.

Not sure about Chang never going off. Several times I have had a draught Chang, once even a bottled, that most definitely tasted different.

One Thai beer, and I do use the term loosely, that I do like is Tapper from 7-11. Only available as far as I know in large cans. A little like a smoother version of Cheers Red and at 6.5 is not too bad. But it's no use trying to find European standard beers in Thailand. Thais prefer the hard stuff which is ridiculously cheap, whereas beer is grossly overpriced by comparison.

I had a Tiger wheat beer while in KL. Pretty decent, but not available in Thailand.

Also in Europe many beerbrands started making wheat beer (white beer).

It's the best beer for hot weather and always tastes fresh.

Federbrau single malt beer (whatever that means) is pretty good vfm.

And it is cheaper than Singha. Good beer made to the German laws........so it says on the bottle. But I thought single malt was for whiskies.

Beer Lao Dark, or Heineken. For some reason, Chang or Singha give me a headache.

The OP should be aware beer flavour components are very fragile, and degrade after about 3 months after manufacture.

There was an Australian beer, Emu Bitter, that was formulated for the tropics. Arsenic was used as a preservative. Don't know if they are still putting arsenic in.

Mate, did you ever drink Emu Bitter. In Australian terms it was g*n's pi**.

But Beer Lao Dark is my favorite but twice the price of Leo so only for special occasions. The trouble with that is my wife does not drink unless I buy Lao Dark.

When I was in Port Hedland ( 1960's ) Emu Bitter and Swan Lager were the only beers you could get.

I'm not sure how to interpret your last sentence. It's cheaper if your wife doesn't drink. However, does her drinking Lao Dark assist you somehow?

One of the criteria for judging lager beers that I use - along with taste and price - is how do I feel the following day after whacking down a few the night before. For me Heineken works best. Beerlao tastes great but hangovers hurt more than Heineken, while Chang & Sing hangovers are torture.

Beer Lao is least headachey beer I have tried in SEA. You can feel a trace headache with Beer Lao up till 11am but it disappears fast.

Some of them give ultimate horror hangovers with the same percent strength and volume.

I have found I have some extreme wipeout allergy to a lot beers, but its generally an easy next day with the old B.Lao.

Edit : I just saw the post above saying BL gives them a bad headache, I think there is an element about beers that makes them suitable to some and not others...the way the body reacts to any ingredients they are not aware they are allergic to.

It's such a shame that the 'Beer' being discussed is in fact all Lager and that there has been no mention of any proper beer:  Bitter, Mild or any like variant.  I am usually offered a "Beer" and express my yearning for a Beer and not for one of the pressure filtered, gassy, chemically laced Lagers.  No matter how many times you point out that clearly there isn't any beer, it doesn't seem to make any difference.  Quite a few countries have laws about what beer is and what it may contain so you'd think that would be common knowledge.

As I haven't found any 'Beer' yet in Thailand it could be that I've been looking in the wrong places and that it's a specialist item.  Does anyone know where you can get proper beers and its trade names?

Snowy Weissen at least it is not pilsener/lager and for 55 baht for a big can at 7/11 you can drink it every day

I've tried that a few times but can't make up my mind whether I like it or not. I'm leaning towards not. Certainly, it doesn't compare well to German beers, but then nothing does.

So did I - and there it means not blended with other whiskies. In this case I have no idea, but it is very drinkable - and cheap

It makes it more expensive as I have to share a case with her, otherwise she does not drink.

Is Carling Black Label a high quality, non-fizzy beer? I always found it interesting that Brits talk such a big game over their Real Ales but then what they actually drink is Carling and Stella.
