UK supermarket Morrisons to sell products in Big C

webfact

Recommended Posts

It appears that Morrisons are trying to go International using foreign retail outlets to sell their products. These goods are not aimed at the expat market in Thailand, they are intended for Thai customers to temp them into liking Western foods. Same as with Tesco Lotus and Big C.

I would guess that as these products will be exported into Thailand from Morrisons UK, that they will be quite expensive, import taxes added on top.

Well let's see who is talking rubbish.

I'm not your lackey, but I looked up just 1 product that is available at big C extra for about 300 Baht. And in Casino Paris at 40 Baht.

You're right, the 300% was rubbish,  I should have said 800%

That Camembert will have been transported halfway around the world, in a refrigerated container, before being distributed in very small quantities throughout a tropical country in refrigerated lorries.

That costs a lot...

Plus for your example you chose the best brand at a promotional price and not a casino product, the casino Camembert is between 170 and 190 baht at BigC, and for me it's ok value, I eat portions of about 30 to 40 baht at a time and I enjoy it more than a small beer, but hey everybody has different priorities and values, it's ok.

BigC and its products (the bakery is really nice with the fresh "pâte feuilletée", thé quiche and the lemon tarts...) is one of the reasons why I don't feel homesick at all here, I eat Thai food most of the time but having options is nice and in the end the cost is reasonable if you don't want to eat exclusively imported products (but the why did you move here?).

Just hope they keep most products I like the way it is.

The casino chocolate for baking cakes is one of them, u can't find it anywhere (this quality at that price 70 baht for 200g it may seem like a lot, but you can make a big cake with that...).

But obviously the prices have gone up in the last 10 years (but everywhere else too) I am just checking promotions and coupon and in my opinion I get good value.

But I have to say, having lived in Tahiti for a while, one of the most expensive places in the world (everything is imported and it's very remote) I tend to have a different way to compare...

A poster in another topic suggested that Villa Supermarket sold Warburtons crumpets. I called in yesterday and found very small crumpets in a cellophane bag labelled "Mighty Soft". Bought a pack of 6 for 145 baht. A big improvement on the very large crumpets that I normally buy from Siamsburys for 99 baht for a pack of 6. Still nothing close to Warburtons (probably the best crumpets in the World) which retail for 42 baht for a pack of 9 in Morrisons in the UK.

I buy crumpets not because I love them (I do) but because my wife is addicted to them. I complained to my wife about the price (145 baht). She replied, "Expensive but very, very tasty, we go for more tomorrow". Every Thai that has tried my crumpets has loved them.

I believe products such as this don't sell in Thailand because of poor/ non existent marketing. If Big C were to put a promotion girl on a stand in Big C offering samples of Warburtons crumpets well toasted and dripping in butter, I'm convinced that they would fly off the shelves. Price them sensibly (i.r.o. 42 baht/ pack of 9) and they'd sell out in minutes.

Wow- do you want us to take up a collection for you to cover the extra .4166 baht per bix? Times must be hard.

Yeah that would be nice and when you have finished shove it where the sun don't shine

They will probably cover the English ingredients list with a Thai label. Drives me craze.

I take a perverse delight in making half-hearted “attempts,” to SCRATCH  their Thai Labels off....then replacing the product on the shelf.

One day, they may get the Message....but then again...TIT.

Tops has a tie-in with Waitrose.

Now Big C are adding Morrisons to the Francophile Casino imports.

Central Markets at least (not sure about Tops) lately have begun carrying some Casino brand products. And I thought Casino's presence at Big C was either ending or declining. There was some news about that a while back...

Central also has begun carrying some Marks & Spencer products, in addition to Waitrose.

Anything that increases the availability, and breadth, of imported products here I'm all in favor of.

Unless you want to subsist off of Thai tinned sardines in tomato sauce, mama noodles and rice soup cups, and jasmine rice every day!!!   :w00t:

I forgot that Villa seems to have a tie-in with Iceland from the UK, or at least there's a fair bit of Iceland's products in the freezers at their Udon Thani branch. Villa has always been the more expensive shopping option compared to their peers in Bangkok and Pattaya. However, despite my being a filthy rich, retired oil and gas man who revels in belittling certain fellow forumites, I don't get too excited about the overpriced imports. Less bespoke imported items are usually available cheaper elsewhere. Even Big C has HP sauce these days.

Things I did like at Tesco-Lotus's 'from England' product line was their curry cook-in sauces as well as their chili and enchilada sauces. Their tea bags and coffee bean selection wasn't too bad either. Also harvested a whole lot of dark chocolate that was reduced offer due to sell/by date proximity.

I've been buying tea in from Ireland. Barry's tea is a decent brew and the bags are easily strong enough in flavour to use twice. That actually makes them better value even than Liptons (the McDonalds of the tea world, universally available but not very good), even taking the postage into account.

No Warburton's crumpets in Pattaya branch! Did enjoy an excellent lunch in the café, which made up for the fruitless search.

If ever Im bored, I pop down to Lotus and start turning round all the bottles and jars to show the English writing, only takes a few minutes for someone to come along and rearrange back to facing in Thai.

Tops is not selling casino products, Tops is now selling few Carrefour products.

And wrong again, new Casino products at Bigc keep being added and they won't stop selling them.

How can you be so wrong ?! Please guys get your facts right before posting nonsense !

And yet it is $5 in Cambodia at the mini-mart next to my apartment.

Same goes for wines and other imported products, they are invariably cheaper in Cambodia.

But as Cambodia is a complete dump and everything else but alcohol, cigarettes, imported food is more expensive, I still prefer to pay my cheese 200 thb in Thailand !!!

how much do you pay for your room/house ? Let us laugh a bit ?

I own the apartment and how much I paid for it is none of your business. I can reveal it has more than doubled in price since I bought it over 10 years ago though. Property there is booming with the influx of Chinese.

I don't stay there often nowadays. I am currently in Sydney and will be returning to Thailand by the end of this month to take up an expat salaried position on the Eastern Seaboard.

I stopped having to worry about the price of groceries a long time ago bud.

Is that "I really want to sound superior" post of the day contest still open for entries?  I think we have a winner.

Uttaradit does not have a Big C yet but one has been proposed , how much extra are people going to have to pay for all of these imported goods an example i usually the Australian cereal Weet-Bix which was 98baht per box of 24 rom Tesco Lotus but it is now 108baht so i wont be buying them any more it seems that Tesco is raising the prices of most things making it very expensive to shop there these days especially with the exchange rate the way it is on the Aussie dollar .

And thats  just a  crap copy of "Weetabix", the real deal, but then again a lot of Tescos "quality" imported foods are actually their cheap own brands in the Uk, the stuff Mr and Mrs  Council House on benefit  would buy there.

Tesco own brand cereals spring to mind.

Sorry, I was confusing Casino and Carrefour....  But I never said Tops was selling either.

Indeed, Central lately has begun selling some Carrefour products, along with Marks & Spencer items.

I think it was Carrefour products that were supposed to be leaving or lessening at Big C.

Concur, if you're in a UK town or city and have a choice, Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco et al, Morrison's has a lot going for it. I like them. As supermarkets go.

I always thought it was 50/50, the Thais not really having a preference. Big C in my local city seems busy all the time I occasionally visit.

If anything i'd prolly put it at 55/45 in Big C's favour.

Perhaps there is a greater economy in scale, importing French Cheeses into Cambodia, which if not exactly francophone any more, certainly has a greater French influence?

So it cost less to transport the cheese to Cambodia than to Thailand?

I think your argument was flawed.

Not my example - I was responding to  a post by "Jaenclaes 47". For the rest, I rather agree with you. Big C has a reasonable range of "falang" foods, for the most part at prices which don't really break the bank - I am only an occasional purchaser.

Now if only they would import Wensleydale cheese...
