What about Casino? That crap must be the Walmart of France. France lol

Big C is miles ahead of Tesco. Tesco as my wife says - is for poor people. The dry goods are much the same but produce sketchy

Big C was owned by Casino for many years, until last year.

Of course your wife consider tesco is for the poor, since she has a rich farang.

So it cost less to transport the cheese to Cambodia than to Thailand?

I think your argument was flawed.

Maybe - it wasn't really an argument though was it, more of a lackadaisical discussion, and I was idly putting forward a possible reason for the price.

I quite like French cheese and I occasionally buy it. I don't really get excited about the price.

I wonder what products we will actually see. Luxury Sage and Onion Stuffing? ( could sell it as a contraceptive and get lower tax).? Yorkshire pudding mix, cottage pie, shepherds pie, Cumberland pie, Lasange, Spaghetti Bolognese, Pizzas, sausages, steak and kidney pies and the like, gravy granules, tea sugar and Pontefract liquorice and not forgetting fish and chips (Bradford style)!

Wel that is just you then, because i get excited when I see a 250 gram President Camembert that sells for 1.25 Euro in Belgium, being sold for 515 Baht in Big C extra

And yet it is $5 in Cambodia at the mini-mart next to my apartment.

Same goes for wines and other imported products, they are invariably cheaper in Cambodia.

Looks like there is an opportunity to set up a cartel in Cambodia, you would need the full support of customs off course - same as Thailand. ?

No Warburton's crumpets in Pattaya branch! Did enjoy an excellent lunch in the café, which made up for the fruitless search.

OK, I'll drop by Villa up here and post a picture for you. Mind you, that was about 3 or 4 weeks ago so maybe some richer bugger with a bigger freezer bought the lot. There are some old duffers with a bit of a wedge up here.

I got so excited about Villa charging only 199 baht for 350 gr blocks of the full range of Cathedral City cheddar cheeses, I bought the lot... and a new, dedicated cheese fridge too. That's only about 50 baht more than the £3.50 for the exact same product at ASDA in the UK.

A poster in another topic suggested that Villa Supermarket sold Warburtons crumpets. I called in yesterday and found very small crumpets in a cellophane bag labelled "Mighty Soft". Bought a pack of 6 for 145 baht.

You must have got them cheap, as they are normally 205

Tops is not selling casino products, Tops is now selling few Carrefour products.

https://www.tops.co.th/en/carrefour-poisson-pane-800g-3560070111817

And wrong again, new Casino products at Bigc keep being added and they won't stop selling them.

How can you be so wrong ?! Please guys get your facts right before posting nonsense !

It all depends on where you live and the population of local farangs. Big cities where there are a fair number then new stuff will be added. Smaller towns and rural areas may get one delivery and if it doesn't sell then it will not be reordered and go on the discount shelf.

Nice to know you can get crumpets here, never noticed before. Shame about the price. At least one of the major supermarkets in Australia will always have Golden (the main Australian brand) for less than $2 (50 baht). I always make sure I bring a few packs back.

Uttaradit does not have a Big C yet but one has been proposed , how much extra are people going to have to pay for all of these imported goods an example i usually the Australian cereal Weet-Bix which was 98baht per box of 24 rom Tesco Lotus but it is now 108baht so i wont be buying them any more it seems that Tesco is raising the prices of most things making it very expensive to shop there these days especially with the exchange rate the way it is on the Aussie dollar .
Given that I bought yesterday a packet of Weetbix (24) in Woolies yesterday for $2.99, 70baht in a direct conversion, I reckon at 108baht you're still doing ok. And let's face it, what are you going to eat instead? Rice?

There will be a whole more box of nails needed before the Thais will prefer Big C over Tesco, or do you still think that the Brits are important for the revenue of a Thai supermarket
Go up to Lopburi and you'll see that bigC is powering along, while the TescoLotus just up the road is on it's deathbed.

The Tesco in N Pattaya is useless its always either out of most British foods or they dont bother to stock them , the one in S Pattaya is much better , i love the Tesco brand salt and vinegar crisps , but must say that at 129 baht a little pricey ,mind you i did stock up a few weeks ago when they had buy one get one free.

The Tesco here in Chonburi is very good at discounting products. This week they had a load of the Sea Salt & Cider variety going at 52 baht, expiry next week but still as good as new.

Crumpets for me, every day, swilled down with a good cappuccino made with good quality, freshly roasted and ground Thai coffee, brewed in a Bialetti..

Not being a Brit: What's special about Morrisons' products that another brand does not provide?

I used to shop a great deal at Morrisons and found that the quality of their own label was better than than that of other supermarkets. I suspect that many of the items are in fact leading brands carrying a Morrisons label. They also run their own 'saver' range of products and these are more in keeping with own branded products.

Thai's WON'T Drink it WITHOUT Sugar in it !!!

Great, more for us farangs to buy, like Robinson's Squashes in Rimping Supermarkets in Chiang Mai.

Then why do the Thais regularly buy and drink "sugar free" Pepsi and Coke which is widely available?

Quite, I have had them in the low 30's but not very often. Although I think Morrisons is about the best of the UK supermarkets it would take a lot more to make me change from Tesco because of the discounting. Nearly all the imported food I buy is from Tesco at around half price. Particularly cheese, got some mature cheddar a couple of weeks ago at around UK prices, very nice.

Fresh fruit and a home made bread roll for me. Why would I want to eat chopped up cardboard boxes with all the flavour of soggy newspaper?

Don't know. Weetabix, to me, is exclusively baby food. mashed up with warm milk and sugar. Never eaten them since I grew teeth.

I doubt if there will be any benefit to the consumer.  Tesco-Lotus is in trouble  as was Carrfour some years back.

The big tesco next to our place in Thonburi is rumoured to be closing later this year.

The prices are insane for most things except Thai products like noodles, cooking oil and soft drinks.

Australia has a FTA with Thailand yet most aussie products are far too expensive. ( wealth/sin tax)

If you look carefully on the big wine bottles and  5lt casks that appear to be reasonably priced its actually a mix of fruit juice with low alcohol content to avoid massive taxes.

I cant understand why the world puts up with Thailands antics. Thailand loves exporting to duty free friendly countries and then turns  and taxes the life out of all  imported foreign goods expecially wine, beer, cheese, cosmetics and perfumes.   They get away with it !

Why are cars built in Thailand so expenisve ??????   AUD $40,000  for a toyota pick up thats is built with thai workers earning 500 dollars a month.

LOS is a consumer shambles.

Everything in Thailand controlled by a handful of uber wealthy Thai-Chinese families who we are making filthy rich every second by buying grossly inflated products. Not many ways around this in Thailand unfortunately. These Thai-Chinese families control the entire supply chain in Thailand from the ports to our mouths. Only remedy is learn to eat and drink what the locals do.
