BANGKOK, 28th September 2018, (NNT) - According to an estimate by the Office of Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion (OSMEP), Muay Thai generates revenue of 100 billion baht yearly.

In response to global admiration of Muay Thai, OSMEP this year launched a project to develop the Muay Thai cluster, in a bid to entice sports-related entrepreneurs to take the national kick-boxing obsession to the next level.

Suwanchai Lohawatanakul , the Director-General of OSMEP, explained the drive behind the push, saying Muay Thai business is growing in popularity in terms of careers and supplementary merchandise. The sport is also becoming a popular recreational activity among the people. Furthermore, Thailand has exported increasing numbers of Muay Thai instructors to other countries. The sport now plays a vital role in economic growth and Thai cultural promotion.

He said Thailand has in particular, drawn enthusiasts from China, the U.S., and European countries where admiration of Muay Thai is most prevalent. However, the OSMEP Director-General, expressed the opinion that the Muay Thai sector needs better management in order to live up to its full potential.

He explained that OSMEP’s project to boost Muay Thai is aimed at encouraging cooperation among key players in the sector. He pointed out that his office supports the idea of consolidating upstream-to-downstream entrepreneurs to boost the competitiveness of the cluster, while implementing technology and innovation to upgrade Muay Thai products and services.
