Ubon - places to visit using local bus service and legs

Recommended Posts

Staying in Ubon for a few days.

Traveling by bus from south of Khon Kaen to stay in Ubon Ratchathani city.

Do not have own transport.
Any ideas for easy to get to places for day trips using local bus services, samlor, legs ?

Ideally for a bright 11 year old boy, museums, historical, dinosaurs etc.

I hear Ubon zoo is OK. There is a large waterpark behind Central in Ubon.

That’s a long way from Ubon.

Sorry misread Ubon for Udon. Eyes a bit dodgy I'm afraid.

If you like temples, Ubon has a very interesting set of them, all different from each other in their original architecture.

In Ubon, you can easily move around with taxi-meter, which are very cheap, cheaper than in Bangkok and without the traffic.

Otherwise you can always go to the Central Plaza which is the rally point of all the Ubon population, especially on week-ends...

Just North, on the HWY 231 Ring Road close to town, there is a beautiful Arboretum. Not big but an ideal retreat for a hot day.

That would be a very short taxi/motocy ride from town. I used to go there for a 30' walk in the mornings.

Central Plaza is super but rather distant from town.

The small quaint Rail Station with its antique locomotive and rail cars outside exhibits is worth a visit.

There is a monumental museum but it's under renovation and might be closed.

The original (albeit small) Thung Sri Muang Night Market is a good central spot for an early evening meal, Adjoins the town main park and short walk to the main river.

Huai Wang Nong (lake) is another spot for nice late arvo walk and meal.

Plenty of nice large temples within central Ubon and surrounds.

Like most SE Asia small cities it's all a bit of a sprawl with pockets of interest here & there.

All though the weather has started to turn this week (cooler & drier) middle of day activities might still be not much fun...pool at sunee tower shopping might be a nice way to spend that time, or the water park as previously mentioned.

Many thanks to all who have responded.

Have used the swimming pool before on top of The Mall, good to be able to get in to a real swimming mode.

I am sure will be able to visit some interesting places.
