"Don't let foreigners sell at Khao San - only Thais can do that", Bangkok governor tells minions

Bangkok governor Gen Asawin Kwanmuang has told his staff to look again at plans to revitalize Khao San road and turn it into a semi "Walking Street".

But one of the areas that he insists on is that there will be no foreigners taking Thai jobs by selling in pitches on the street, reported Daily News.

The governor - installed under Article 44 laws by prime minister Prayut Chan-Ocha in 2016 - was speaking after his deputies and the Phra Nakorn district presented plans for the new Khao San.

He wants to see more details about times the road will be opened and closed and when and how a proposed automatic roof will operate.

He also wants to see further discussion on the 88 million baht budget proposed for the scheme.

He is also keen to ensure that, apart from the no foreigner rule, only one pitch is given to each trader and that there is no sub-letting of pitches.

It has been suggested that the road can recover its "tourist landmark" status by turning it into a kind of Walking Street with a one lane road  that would satisfy both visitors and traders alike and provide some form of access.

"Don't let foreigners sell at Khao San..."

But foreigners are welcome to spend their money in Bangkok markets while running the risk of being gunned down by scumbag punks in tribal war clashes?

So no more Indian tailors, hill tribes selling wooden frogs or little girls peddling roses.

That is what it was: vital and a walking street.  Now it is neither.  More mind numbing antics.

Are there not laws already in place that state what business foreigners are not allowed to engage in ?   The BK governor, who did not know sex was carrying on in Lumpini park, wants to interpret the law regarding what foreigners can and cannot do and where.   The man has no filter between all that air that fills his skull and his mouth.  That is the problem in Thailand.  Every official wants to be judge and jury.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.  Wouldn't be any need to recover if they just left things  alone

Tyrants need enemies. That's the only way they can maintain power. What better way than to get stupid people on your side than convince them to victimize the foreigners who already have few rights anyway.

I have heard the place lost its reputation with backpackers and is pretty quiet now.  hard to get a reputation back after it is lost.

Always picking at foreigners ? In fact foreigners should plainly boycott Thailand...it may then give some locals a moment to think and re consider their views on foreigners and their money !
