Thai woman issues dating site warning: All is not as it may seem

Recommended Posts

I freely admit I am a dinosaur. However, Facebook baffles me. Why would anyone want to know what I had for dinner? Why would I want to put any personal data on there?

Seems to me it's just a narcissist temple in cyberspace.

Years ago there was a scam on some dating sites that were created in Thailand. Turns out that a guy (and his wife I think it was) were creating false profiles (similar to that mentioned in the OP) and then would converse with anyone that clicked on those profiles, pretending to be that "hot, sexy woman that likes fat old foreigners".

The scam was that the foreigners would have to pay for "premium" memberships in order to see more "intimate" pictures or get contact information or the ability to send/receive more messages (basically the same things that pretty much every dating website does minus the husband/wife imitating members bit).

Not sure how they were eventually caught but it didn't seem to change anything as it seems there are more dating sites popping up everyday, everywhere and I'm guessing that the most "attractive" profiles on them are also fake.

(Except for the girls that are in Pattaya and use those sites like an escort service. They are probably real.)

The supply and demand will continue to walk hand in hand here as everywhere else....

I have to admit, after first moving to Thailand back in 2003, I tried one of these "dating" sites.  After spending a few bob, never ever got to meet anyone of the ladies I was interested in from the website.  After being there for a few years, realized I was taken for a ride.  Bought the gold mine but got the shaft.

I think these particular scams will dry up once this old generation has moved on. The kiddies are far more savvy and and less gullible online.

My question is what is the point of it all if you're not here or are here? If you're here, there are woman for hire EVERYWHERE. A guy can walk 500 meters in any direction and get a load out for cheap. If you're not in Thailand, why do these old guys bother?

I didn't mean "here" as a location but "here" as in this setting comparing to other settings where it exist supply and demand.

It will always be someone that will try to seek out from their loneliness by contacting other through internet - those who have the power to psychically seek contact outside their 4 walls do not need to use the internet. Its also a difference between those who seek someone just for hire and those who seek a long lasting relationship. As long as there are a demand it will be a supply and not vice versa.

These 500 metres in any direction to get a load on the cheap. I`ve tried and not had any luck. Do you have maps?

Working as a web master and not be able to set the privacy settings on FB in a way that non friends can't see or download her pics. And even listed her phone number somewhere? Says it all really.

Just found her on facebook, twitter and instergram.

She has hundreds of photos of herself on those medias. Not being a friend I had access to all her data on those sites and within only a couple of minutes probably discovered more about her than she knows about herself. This means whoever created that dating site profile of her, could be anyone out of thousands of people, maybe someone not even in Thailand.

If these people do not take precautions to protect their own privacy, than what does she expect the police to do? Sorry, don`t have a lot of sympathy for these people.

One of the sexiest photos of her on the dating site is obviously photoshopped. Her head on another body.

exactly. the attention seeking these types do on social media... and the sheer stupidity of not regulating your privacy setting (so much for being a "web master"... we talking about spider webs or what here?).... I'm sorry but "bad people" wouldn't have any materials to steal if YOU never provide the materials for the whole public to easily steal.... How dumb.

I don't think you understand this very well. If a friend shares something you posted then a 'third party' can look at your profile even if what you have posted is for Friends Only. They might - might - only be able to 'lift' your picture and name, but they can then set up a page under your name. It's quite common and happened to me. I only found out when I was invited to Friend myself as someone I might know.

Of course, listing your phone number is stupid and does say it all. But we are dealing with a Thai here, many of whom have the naivety of a child.

naivety is not the word that I would use here... naivety has an undertone of not knowing, being innocent, being the victim, etc. In cases like these, it's just ignorance, narcissism and sheer stupidity. They don't know not because nobody has never told them, they don't know simply because they don't want to know. Information is out there and very accessible. Even the dumbest "web master" would know about the very basics of internet privacy. In this case, they don't know because they are way too self-absorbed to care. She deserves this harsh lesson. Hope other Thais learn from her lesson and stop posting on social media 10 times a day. Really annoying.

Not to disparage the lady but . . . mess around with the giant social media tech sites - FaKebook, Google, TwItter, Amazon etc - be ready for the [possible adverse] "consequence".

I'm in Bangkok, but if you are outside the city, it might be double the distance to find a willing transactional participant. I've not had to go very far ever in Thailand!

I think we all know the Thai propensity for face building on Facebook and other social media. We have seen all the tendency to post most stuff Public to that it has the maximum face building effect.

And, yeah, she's probably a "web master" in the same way the condo plumbers are "engineers". Titles in Thailand are useful only as a way to gauge what someone THINKS they are rather than what they ACTUALLY are.
