Thousands of Thai women are "victims" helping foreigners in "marriages of convenience"

Thai media reported that police are investigating thousands of cases where Thai women accepted marriage offers from foreigners they never met to make money.

The money was offered by agents and was as little as 3,000 baht.

But the women were desperate for cash and were under the impression that they would be able to divorce after a year.

However, many have found that they are still married after three years and have lost their benefits as a result.

The problem has been revealed as widespread and usually features men from India and Pakistan who want to come and live and work in Thailand, reported TNA.

Their report featured a marriage certificate that had been attached to a power pole in one area where there are a lot of men from the Indian sub-continent.

TNA reported that there were ten "victims" in one housing estate alone in Samut Sakhon.

But elsewhere the problem was rife - there are 600 cases under investigation in Nong Bualamphu province, 1000 in Nakorn Pathom and as many as 2,000 in Saraburi alone.

Tough.

You knowingly entered into a fraudulent marriage.

As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

Why on earth would someone get involved  in a "fake marriage" to stay in Thailand? Indians? India has nothing to envy from Thailand !... Maybe Pakistan or Nepal, but seeing Thailand as "a land of opportunity" seems really far fetched.

So just more BJ BS...

If the woman divorced after 12 months then what benefits would she receive unless it is benefits from her ex-husband in a divorce settlement.

Why are the police not going after the agents and charging them with corruption

Gee don't tell all of my Indian friends as they think Thailand is a paradise compared to India.

Old wives tale.  There used to be an anti Farang law that deprived Thai women of some legal rights if they married a foreigner.  The reporters weren't capable enough to check if this was now or 50 years ago.

Thank you! What benefits did they lose and further to that it takes all of about 3 minutes down the local amphur to be no longer married. There is no time limit you can get divorced pretty much the same day if you wanted. Another steaming pile of not news
