You go to any Pharmacy here in Thailand asking for something for a problem and they will give you a handful of different drugs because this is what Thais do when their sick , i am yet to see my wife just take one tablet for something its usually 2-4 and different types depending on what is wrong . Thai logic if one doesn't work the others will .

Because they do not take them all anyway, they just take 1-2 days and that's it. We have a whole box hidden somewhere with old drugs.

Your post is nonsense, medicine is a huge money maker for hospitals here?

Absolute nonsense, just back 1 hour ago from the hospital, with medicine for my UTI.

28 pills ( ofoxacin ) bill 142 baht, so how the hell are the hospital making money out of that?

Porters lifted me on a gurney, nurse took a sample of my urine, taken away and tested, doctor prescribed pills porters lifted me back in the pickup.

Now before anybody starts telling me i am wrong, i have the bill in my hand, just need to find out how i can get that on here, if i can i will.

I think the difference is probably private versus government hospitals. At Bangkok Hospital in Samui they always try to push unnecessary tests and their charge for medicines is many times the cost at local pharmacies and they definitely prescribe more than needed. The cost also goes up significantly if you are insured. The government hospital in Nathon is far less a rip off for medicine.

I dont know the law in thailand but if 19 is underaged i think they can lock up every bar owner and operator in thailand i think your information is a bit harsh

Thailand does not have laws for drinking or anything else.  It only has guidelines to be followed by those too poor to pay to ignore them.

Thailand does have alcohol restriction laws and they are enforced (for everyone) .

I was given several for something once, and out of interest I looked up what they were and discovered that some were dangerous if taken with the others. Along with an experience of being two days from dead, according to a hospital I eventually attended after being told my acute food poisoning was bronchitis, and a friend who's heart attack was diagnosed as indigestion, I am very much aware that you take your life in your hands in Thailand if any medical situation arises. I'm convinced that some qualify as a doctor by buying a white coat.

I was quoting spermwhale who said a doctor was a liar, and medicines was a money maker for hospitals here, even you said the government hospital in Nathon was less of a rip off.

What happened with me today proves that is nonsense.

These appeared to be pharmaceutical in nature.

Fenistil - cream for itchy rashes

Preventino - I believe is a brand of condoms

The rest appear to be pills that many tourists would carry with them.

I would probably also have viagra, imodium, paracetamol, Amoxicillin, and Systral cream.

Some medications, even OTC can have contradictions when used in combination with other drugs, and in some cases can be fatal particularly when consumed with a few alcoholic drinks or he upped the recommend dosage..

I wonder whether the cocktail of drugs were prescribed by a doctor or recommended by a pharmacist?

And if these led to his death.. Too young at 19 yrs to suddenly die.. RIP..

Private (shop) Thai Pharmacists are not to be trusted. They never ask what other meds you may or may not be taking. They have little thought on the ‘Big Phama’ cocktail reactions.

Man, this place is becoming a frightening place, ‘mental, totally mental’ !

A cocktail of drugs all washed down with lashings of alcohol... recipe for a certain end !!

Figures suggest that pills are actually very hard to kill yourself on, even with the alcohol.

It's crazy as the visions of some people are different, for many the pointing is ridiculous. But for me, it's funny,  all those pointing starting in most situations for the pictures makes me laugh.

What are the "pointers" pointing at ?

Hilarious !!

Surprised they weren’t pointing at the ceiling if they suspected he was on drugs.

Either way, if he was mixing drink and drugs, that wouldn’t be a very wise decision.

Any I've heard a Thai doctor say that they always give 3 or 4 different tablets to patients because if they don't the patient will say they got poor service from the doctor, even ask for more tablets.

It's a puzzle.

Hardly a problem unique to Thailand.

if doctors offered more tailored, personal advice to patients and stopped prescribing large amounts of drugs to cover long periods of time.

But doctors say patient demands make it hard to make such changes

Not at all , just reported that various drugs were found in his room, which they were .

I do think that you are just looking for something to complain  about

I think it entirely reasonable to complain about ; A) Police spokesmen making ill judged observations publicly B) So called news outlets publishing the said nonsense.

For goodness sake the majority of people will have some medication in their rooms , might just as well mention his suitcase was full of T shirts !@!

It is suspected that the drugs may have contributed to his death and that is what has been reported , so, its quite reasonable for them to write that in the story

A lot of tourists come from countries where the drinking age is 18 to party.  I doubt any establishment is going to knock back these tourist dollars.

suspected? where?? it is very common here to take photos of drugs and show around, just to put a blame.

so if they cannot find anything, they will link this case like 'hey, he used drugs and that is why he died.'

nonsense.

The doctor is lying. I have thai doctor friends and they are TOLD by the hospital management to prescribe as much as they can because medicine is a huge money maker for the hospitals here. The mark up is extreme and it's easy money for the hospitals as the patients are too afraid to reject the pills.

It is a money maker only for private hospitals. For government hospitals, which get a flat per capita amount based on population of their catchment area, it causes a profound LOSS. And government hospitals provide the overwhelming majority of care in Thailand. Yet they also do it (overprescribe).

Thai patients do indeed equate the quality of care with the number of diffetent medications given and are insulted and outraged if sent home with nothing. Very well educated people will be an exception but this is the rule. Hospital staff respond to this. When you are at a hospital in a situation where no medication is needed, you need to speak up and assure the staff you understand this and don't mind.

I have far more on hand in my house and I assure you, if I drop dead tomorrow, it will have nothing to do with drugs.

Been to Siriraj, BKK (massive government hosp., me thinks) last week and this week,

with a view to sort one ailment

(they multiply their prices with 1.25 for foreigners)

I am just amazed by the heaps of tablets they throw at me, incredible really - and am NOT happy with that

The size of the pill mountain makes me doubt their insight in how sorting my ailment.

And I see a clear tendency to expand my portfolio to cover aspects/issues not really relevant to what

I want sorted.
