An Indian woman was arrested at a hotel on Koh Samui in Surat Thani on Tuesday after allegedly handing over counterfeit UK currency at an exchange booth.

Puja Kermit Kakel (not official spelling), 46, was arrested after the teller at the booth filed a complaint with the Borphud police station.

Jindaporn Sikamut, 20, told police that a customer had arrived to exchange a wad of 20-pound notes at 3.30pm.

Jindaporn said she accepted the banknotes, which looked authentic and had light-reflecting watermarks. But she studied the notes more closely once the customer had left and discovered that four had the same serial number.

The Indian told police she purchased the notes innocently from an exchange firm in India before a trip to England, and they were left over from the trip.

Police refused to accept the explanation, saying she gave a fake name while exchanging the money and did not present her passport.

I have always wondered what I would do if I found a bunch of forged currency. Devil on one shoulder and an Angel on the other. But using an exchange house with CCTV and in a country where ID is required to exchange currency has never figured high on my good ideas on the devil side.  Also handing over notes with the same serial number at one location didn't jump out at me as a brilliant stroke of genius either.

In Thailand I have always had to provide it.

Me too - Pattaya and Phuket - I always have to show either PP or copy of it and the Exchange takes a copy for themselves (I don't like that, by the way but tis a necessary evil)

Bright spark uses a false name to change fake notes and when the game is up she lies to the police.

She even decides to use notes with the same serial numbers at the same booth, mastermind.

Someone that stupid is probably safer in a Thai jail than left to their own devices.

Is ID required for the exchange of any amount?

Exchange booths for banks require it, there is a exchange company not affiliated with banks on the island that not require it, guess this is the one targeted.

There are likely more of these in circulation

This woman should find it easy to prove her claimed journey to the UK, if she can't then I expect more to follow from this story

She's Indian,,, so probably from England

Pretty sloppy criminal isn't it?  I remember a few times when I was a kid and got caught lying. I didn't like the feeling then so for my entire life I go out of my way as an adult to avoid doing stupid or illegal things.  I guess I thank the adults, teachers, and others for influencing me and teaching me some lessons as a kid.
