So, you don't buy a condo, you rent an appartment. And these appartments are cheap.

As the country moves steadily to Thailand 0.4, we can expect some move to MS Excel instead of paper calculations at the Finance Ministry. Slide rules will be out. The Thai population will be given free shovels to dig through the trash outside their homes. Westerners will slowly disappear from the scene and Thai women will identify another nationality that has free cash in pocket. The country will build a nuclear arsenal to defend itself against threats from Lao buffalo attacks. The Thai language will become the lingua franca of business in Hua Hin. Westerners will complain about why things aren't as good as blighty and a lot worse than Trump's America. There will be three coups and the navy will have more aircraft carriers than any other navy. All will have parking in Sattahip, which will have a 16 lane highway from Chiang Mai where admirals they have winter homes.

I have maybe 30 years left to live , but if I want to beat my dad who died at 93 , I have almost 40 years left of my life. 

So can't wait for 2050 , here I come Thailand!

No offense but the oldest gay guy I ever spotted working in a bar was 41 I think and even that's rather desperate as we're not interested in those oldies, we want < 30 at least.

I'm not so sure in Thailand, I know that one of the founders of Boys Town started this about 20-25 years ago so I guess there aren't that many over-aged gigolos (yet). I do know that some people died of HIV, some people committed suicide,???? and I suppose most just go back to where they came from.

 

Going 10 years forward, I'm not sure what to think, I don't see a lot of young Thai folks enter the scene, but there has been an influx from Cambodia, so much that Jomtien Complex has many dozens of them.  Some bars have gone under due to that as the police came knocking on the door, illegal workers, fines that ran into the hundreds of thousands of bahts that they couldn't afford, sometimes even making arrangements with the local police to pay it in terms.

 

The real cuties always manage to find someone but according to a Thai mamasan friend of mine most start to look unhappier by the day, which I can imagine if you have to live with a boring 55+-year-old expat. Fun life's over but a fat check for mom & dad.

 

And some get lucky, do manage to find a farang that isn't 20-30 years older but more like 5-10 years that invite them to their country. I was surprised to hear that someone I knew from the bar scene, that I always considered a little crazy was on a flight to France.

 

Anyhow cruel or not, if I have to pay I can choose, so why would I pay for a 40-year-old when I can have a 20-year-old for the same price ???? Those sweet little bottoms, can't get enough of them lol.

The OPs observations only apply to a very small part of Thailand as a whole. Thais are much wealthier than they were, and there is a rapidly growing middle class.

And it works, and it pays, without having to move from the bedroom!

 

I know a group of them who live the good life (think the Thai version of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills).

 

Providing everything else remains as it is (which is highly unlikely), years from now you would have two distinct categories on the "market": the high end pretty and smart only available via the net, for top dollar, and the lazy not so bright and not so pretty moving their a..in a bar.

In ten years Thailand will be a fourth rate country. In the Asean block they will have fallen behind Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and the Phillipines. It's in their DNA to think that the sun shines of Thailands ar..se and the reality of that fallacy is hitting them every year but this "face" thing blinds them to that.

Read the news and try to understand how much in debt this middle class is. The country is drowning in debt and it will only get worse. They may earn more, but the more they earn the more they spend.

Just like the middle class in the Western world and China then? Just by having a growing middle class shows that Thailand is still comparatively richer than it ever was.

 

Aside from a few corners of rural areas, to suggest that Thailand as a whole needs or cares about a few old farang geezers on pensions is setting yourself up for a disappointment.

There are quite a few countries, such as Malaysia or Portugal for example, who are welcoming retirees and offering them incentives to settle.

 

Retirees offer multiple advantages, they bring money in the country, don't take the jobs of the locals but instead give them work, and are generally unlikely to cause trouble.

 

Maybe Thailand still has to figure this out...

If some think Thailand is expensive, they would find Malaysia and Portugal far to expensive. Especialy if they are not EU or Schengen member from before considering Portugal. Been a few trips in Spain now, and Im chocked how hostile the locals are against the tourists, and the price level. I found out Thailand is the far best option for me still for a long time.

There is no problem  -  I was answering this............pay attention:

"On my soi that counts 8 houses, there are 3 for rent, and they've been for rent as long as I live here (1-year).  I take this as 3 apartments empty for over a year have been for rent on his soi.  I live in Jom Tien and there are tons of places for rent as well - my tongue in cheek answer was related to a post last month of a guy complaining cause a Farang posted signs showing the soi flooding that stops others from buying their houses.

Please do not compare Spain with Portugal , it's like night and day when it comes to the price level . I was offered a job in Lisbon but unfortunately I turned it down , apartments can be rented for as low as €200-300 . With an income of around €1500 you can live a good life in Portugal.  The local salaries are as low as €700-800 . 

Maybe not as cheap as Thailand in some areas , but eating out in restaurants is not pricey there. And a lot cheaper western food.

I mentioned especialy if you not eu citizen, but I aggree, Portugal is quite a bit cheaper, but you get what you pay for! 

 

At the end it is your choice! Portugal is also a bit colder due to atlantic ocean.
