CHIANG MAI, 6 November 2018 (NNT) - The Meteorological Department (TMD) hosted an international workshop on innovation and technology for typhoon forecasts and disaster mitigation.

Deputy TMD Director-General Phuwieng Prakhammintara, along with Chiang Mai Provincial Governor Supachai Iamsuwan, presided over the opening of the 13th Integrated Workshop of Typhoon Committee under the theme of technological innovations for typhoon forecasts and disaster mitigation.

The workshop aimed to help push forward the advancement of hydrology and disaster mitigation activities, and promote researches and training. The workshop, taking place until 9 November 2018, is participated by some 80 delegates from 14 Typhoon Committee member countries, as well as the World Meteorological Organization, and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) as observers.

The workshop focused on enhancing the integration of cooperation and progress in an action plan, revising previous tasks, and setting next year's action plan.

The deputy TMD chief said Thailand will present the innovation on the use of a radar system to forecast typhoons with an 80% accuracy, which enables related agencies to plan for possible disasters in advance in effort to minimize damage.

The TMD will also push for more exchanges and learning sessions among member countries, and drive forward activity within the Typhoon Committee framework to provide more concrete research and training courses in the future.
