Trouble is that "the people" have a tendency to take the actions of a minority as a justification for unleashing their nascent prejudices upon the majority.

That is evidenced daily on these pages where "the people" of the TVF "community" regularly zero in on the behaviour of minorities (who exist within foreign minorities) as proof of the evil of them all.

let us hope that the people of Isaan do not find themselves enduring (on a regular basis) the sort of behaviour that has become commonplace in the "tourist" areas and has, probably, soured the attitude of many ordinary Thai people towards foreigners in general.

However the constant exhortations (to tourists) to discover the "real" Thailand (in Isaan) probably guarantee it.

What you describe is exactly what happens here with all the Thaibashing, on Thaivisa.

Anyway i agree 100% with you, and actions like this will sour the attitude of many normal Thais.

Here people are a lot more friendly then in Pattaya.. but also there are a lot less foreigners here. I would get ticked off too if I had to deal with people like that. You get your deference up right away even for the good people.

It's a term that started in the north of England but quickly spread across the UK. I just looked it up and it is supposed to stand for "Council House And Violent". not sure if thats right but it is used to generally describe the low life that behave badly and dress a certain way,, specifically baseball caps, T shirts and jogging bottoms.

Not people us Brits are proud to call our own. Every country has these kind of people, I just wish they would stay where they are and not travel giving such a negative stereotype to normal Brits,, but what can you do.

Stop using the word chav, says an article in the Fabian Review, it is “deeply offensive to a largely voiceless group”.

I am not in the habit of agreeing with the socialistic Fabian Society, but they have a point. Chav does not derive from “Cheltenham Average” or “Council House and Violent”. It comes from a Romany word for “boy”. The origin is irrelevant, though, for it is the meaning that hurts.

Certainly the stereotypical chav is an absurd figure in his white tracksuit and bling, a silly hairstyle and Burberry accessories, perhaps accompanied by a nasty bullish terrier.

But many people use chav as a smokescreen for their hatred of the lower classes. That is a despicable subterfuge. It is not the gipsies that are the victims of the chav stereotype, but the useless youths who hang around with nothing to do.

True, schoolchildren have adopted the label chav to identify their own tendency (in opposition to Goths and emo monsters). But that just makes them act up to their bad image.

To call people chavs is no better than public schoolboys calling townies “oiks”.

I like the bit about what he said to the Tuk tuk driver, does he not realise he is in Thailand,Magaluf would have seemed a better destination for him,by the way i did not care for the comment on Public school boys by another poster, having attended Harrow, i have never called people 'oiks',peasants or serf's is more accurate.

I remember once when I was a lot younger and stupider, laughing at a tramp. My Grandad told me not to judge as I didnt know his story. Same here, really as we dont know how life has treated him.

Having said that, he needs bringing into the real world. Im sure, if he continues to act like that, someone inevitably will. I ll not be laughing when it happens.
