ONB News reported that the chief of police in Pattaya was investigating after an alleged case of extortion by officers and volunteers in Pattaya.

A man referred to as "Ek" had contacted his sister after he and two friends were stopped by police and taken to a "safe house".

This happened in the Nong Prue police jurisdiction.

Once at the safe house the men claiming to be cops spoke to "Yai", the sister, to demand 300,000 baht for the release of her relative.

This was bargained down to 160,000 that the police accepted.

The sister went to Nong Prue police who said they had no record of the bust.

But the men involved turned up at Pattaya police station as the three suspects were released.

It was not clear in the story if the money had already been paid or if the police had got cold feet after reporters got involved.

The chief promised an investigation.

The Pattaya chief is Pol Col Apichai Krobpetch.

of EVERY bar/company/business in the city.  They are complicit in allowing the taxi mafia to break the law of the land every hour of every day.  They merely hold-up motorists or demand extra fees to do the job they are paid to do.

Friend (not farang) gets the shakedown every month. 2 different "law enforcement" groups tapped for 10k each. Then some group based in BKK started coming around too. Business in Pattaya. I can say no more...

Kindly prepare some cushy "inactive posts" at the Operations Center, for some cushy postings with full salary.

After their announcement Pattaya is prostitution-free there must be a surrogate  source of income. In the unlikely event someone get caught in illegal activities they are working on solutions:

CCTV can usually expose the guilty these days. I've seen stories of cops being caught out that way, and even a shopkeeper who installed it and then was caught by her own CCTV stealing from a customer's bag while they were trying on a dress in the changing cubicle :cheesy:
