From the Nation:

Better healthcare soon for the South

Canada yesterday agreed to make a financial contribution to a Bt40-million project by the Public Health Ministry to improve the access to healthcare of people living in the violence-plagued deep South.

The project is part of the ministry's efforts to resolve the lack of healthcare workers in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, plus four districts of Songkhla.

........
In an associated project, the Cabinet had previously approved the ministry's proposal to provide 3,000 more nurses for the three southernmost provinces.

The region has long had a shortage of medical and healthcare personnel, largely due to the persistent violence.

My husband has a cousin who works as a nurse and her husband a Annamai health care (nurse?) in the South and said that, as far as they know, the insurgents do not target health care workers. She has been living there for at least 6 years so far with no trouble at all.
