He says "enough is enough" and that too many people are being bitten and harassed. Measures adopted by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) have so far proved insufficient and new plans are now being made to address the issue. The sight of soi dogs has been a ubiquitous part of the landscape in Bangkok for hundreds of years. Officials in 50 districts are now being trained in catching techniques and strays will be removed from the capital and taken upcountry after screening. Governor Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang has assured the public that collected dogs would not be killed and they would be looked after. But he is urging people who can no longer take care of their pets to contact the BMA and not discard them on the street. Aswin says that the current process of vaccinating, neutering and catching dogs that bite people have been insufficient. So he has ordered his deputy to meet stakeholders in 50 districts to address the problem. The numbers of soi dogs will first be registered in each district then teams will be assigned to round up those with no owner, those that have strayed and those that might be dangerous to the public. They will first be taken to a BMA site in Prawet where they will be screened for disease, vaccinated and sterilised, he said. Then they will be taken to a dog pound in Uthai Thani that can cater for 8,000 animals. He is also calling on the Department of Public Health, the Veterinarian Department, university vet departments and dog-care organisations to help with updating processes and procedures for controlling the problem. This will barely scratch the surface, and when the pound gets overwhelmed with the influx of too many animals, they'll leave the gates open one night and the dogs will be back on the streets again. Khun Paul Posted November 15, 2018 Share Posted November 15, 2018 Although it is apparently against Buddhism top kill animals, it is ok for these same animals to roam in packs and bite and attack people. Many of these animals are there BECAUSE of Human indifference the same humans who object to them being killed. The vast expense in catching treating and keeping these dogs will be enourmous, but against a simple injection cost nomore than 2/300 baht the problem is solved, if you take the upcountry pound that is 8000 x 300 24,000:00 baht a ONE OFF COST as opposed to the cost of keeping said 8000 dogs will be approx 50 baht a day in one year that is Thb 400,00:oo a day YOU DO THE Maths !! mserror Posted November 15, 2018 Share Posted November 15, 2018 Against Buddhism to kill animals? Except when Buddhists want to eat animals. Send them to a pound with 8,000 dogs? Like some wretched prison, where they can be even more miserable. How about making a decision and euthanasing these unwanted dogs, and then enacting some preventive measures. unamazedloso Posted November 15, 2018 Share Posted November 15, 2018 just had a pack of them attack our dogs in our property. Wish i could send them to doggy hell! Then i would be the bad one..... Our neighbours refuse to have there dogs in their own property and would never listen to anyone telling them otherwise nor would anyone bother it seems. Wiggy Posted November 15, 2018 Share Posted November 15, 2018 What about the nice ones? We have two stray dogs in our soi; they are friendly and well kept by the motorcycle boys. fdimike Posted November 15, 2018 Share Posted November 15, 2018 You would have to make Thai people responsible to solve the problem and that's just not going to happen. My wife and I have had a number local female dogs neutered at our expense because the owners were "too busy" to have it done. The typical scenario is to never train the animal (too much trouble for the owner), better to just let them run free. It's a pretty sad situation if you ask me. The seems like an exercise by those in positions of decision making power to ‘pull the wool over their own eyes’... .....no one wants to send a load of living creatures to their deaths, but a problem needs resolution... ... The solution.. allow corruption to take hold, turn a blind eye to those selling the dogs to meat factories etc... claim shock & outrage if the truth gets out on social media... There is a lovely pond in the Chinese quarter of Udon Thani that has 3000 koi carp in it. Surely this is no different to the compound. Creatures are there for us humans to enjoy.
