Conservationists have voiced their support behind efforts to list Chao Mai National Park and the Mo Koh Libong No-Hunting Zone in Trang province as Asean Heritage sites, as this would help strengthen conservation work in the area.

Pakpoom Witantirawat, secretary-general of the Andaman Foundation promoting sustainable use of Andaman resources, said the group has agreed that the two sites covering more than 500,000 rai should be listed as Asean Heritage.

The Cabinet approved the proposal in August, and the Asean Heritage Parks Committee sent its experts to assess the area.

Communities have been eager to take part in the initiative, offering to help officials with conservation work in the area.

The team also discussed measures to curb the impact of over tourism and threats against the local dugong population.

The experts will submit their report to the committee, which will then propose it to high-level Asean officials before it is tabled before the meeting of Asean environment ministers next year.
