Five people were killed and another five seriously injured when the pick-up truck of a family returning from a shopping trip collided head-on with an oncoming pick-up truck just one kilometre before reaching the family’s home on Sunday night in Chachoengsao.

Following a report of the fatal crash in Bang Pakong at 9.30pm, police and rescue workers rushed to the scene – the Rang ta Sorn curve on the old Sukhumvit Road in tambon Song Khlong.

They found four dead bodies – later identified as Apichat Wanarat, 31, Sasinat Lertsuwan, 30, Pimpisa Lertsuwan, 31, and Patch-amporn Lertsuwan, 57 – in a Mitsubishi Triton pick-up truck that had overturned in the roadside ditch. Passenger Piyawat Pliansiri, 35, who had been thrown from the vehicle, was seriously injured.

Piyawat said his group was returning from a mall and was only one kilometre from home when the crash took place.

Officers found the other pickup – a Toyota Revo – on the road with four injured people trapped inside, along with the dead body of Pitak Saengnak, 23.

The wounded four were later identified as Nattapol Jaiyot, 27, Nisa Sonmang, 32, Natchakul Jaiyot, 9, and Pitak’s seven-month-pregnant wife Jintala Nilakhon, 20.

One was thrown from the pick up---presumably rear bed..how many others were in the bed?

Last week saw 2 pick-ups carrying schoolkids on the outskirts of Buriram. Must have been 20 standing up in the rear bed of each pick up. Going fast!  Would not have stood a chance in an accident

Whatever happened to the review of travelling in pick-ups?  Nothing like everything else in Thailand.

And absolutely zero reported on why this happened!

Because no one cares why it happens and authorities have little interest in trying to persuade the population from self-euthanising !!

A clip on LL yesterday seemed to be from a dashcam in one of these cars showing the other on the wrong side of the road at speed with no lights.

One kilometre......no problem, we'll be there in 2 milliseconds.

guaranteed  no seat belts, followed a  moron last night with no lights on, kept  flashing him, after about 2  km the penny finally  dropped.

I read an article several years back released by an insurance company that said most car accidents occur within 5 miles of the victims homes.

Yes I remember that and I have told my TW that when she just goes the 1k to the town to put her skid lid on.

Good call. People are just too relaxed near home thinking "this is my back yard and I know it like the back of my hand" all too often forgetting everything they ever learned about road safety and being aware on that same road.
