The Democrat party will not attend the meeting on Friday between the so-called “Five Rivers”, the Election Commission and political parties if it is chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, party spokesman Thana Chiravinit said this morning.

He pointed out that the original purpose of the meeting as earlier outlined by the National Council for Peace and Order was to be a forum for discussion on election-related issues.

But the purpose of the meeting has been distorted to be just a session for political parties to be informed of ready-made plans worked out by the “Five Rivers” without any discussion, Thana said, pointing out the limited time of the meeting which will be between 1-3 pm.

We will now know which political parties are aligned with the military and will be attending. Time for the pro democracy parties to stand up and make a statement by not attending unless EC heads the meeting.

I understand the meeting will be chaired by Khun Gerry Mandering, head of the EC.

Who didn't see this coming ?  The tinpot running the elections for which he desperately wishes to win without actually being a candidate and debating.  Perhaps one day Thailand will stop rewarding such cowardice, double talk and deceit.

The Election Commission is the sole "independent organization" responsible for the conduct and compliance with election laws in the National General Election.

The EC should be the sole agency conducting the meeting. That means none of the other Four Rivers and no official from the Prayut government should attend and be involved in this meeting in any capacity.

Abhisit's boycott of the meeting if it’s chaired by Prayut is shortsighted and not courageous enough to push for a free and open democratic election (albeit it won't be such in any event).

All should boycott it anyway.

That is the only way it is productive for any to boycott. If only one party boycotts they are likely to be prohibited from participating in the election.
