A few years ago, my wife told me she had to pay some grease (pink envelope) to officials at immigration, the land office and so on. It got me the forms I needed. This tour, I see that all govt agencies have the "no tips" signs everywhere. I was told it is effective at a low level at least. I do know for sure that you cannot bribe immigration. But don't ask me how I know. If it starts to hold up - well that is good. But don't hold your breath. Land offices have been mentioned. We have been waiting for 2 years to have a simple transaction to be signed off. We were originally told it would cost 10,000 baht for the guy to do his job. The Junta have been in power for many years and corruption has not improved....has it changed? Yes, it is now specifically legislated for...an example is the 50,000 baht fine for not having your license which is a boon for every policeman. I rest my case. Prayut has dictatorial powers enshrined in Art 44, yet he cannot pass a law getting public office holders to declare their assets.....and when his mates don't declare them, he ignores it. Corruption exists in every country....but here is is fostered at the very highest levels and is shoved in your face....as I said it is depressing. We want actions not words. Most cannot fill out forms in a foreign language, or open accounts in other countries, so it's not difficult to catch. Fill up the jails with deterrent sentencing.
