Thailand’s roads remain some of the deadliest in the world, new report reveals

Hitting a tree/electric pole dead on.

Head on colissions.

Overtaking at a blind curve.

Zigzagging on a 3-line highway to save micro seconds.

They can't, because it's a mental thing. Education won't help.

Dated at least five widows/single moms that have lost their husbands to Thailand's unsafe roads.  It seems hopeless and complete failure.  They need to educate teenagers before they become a statistic.

Why the keep telling us the same news the same result for the last 10 years. We know Thailand has the gold medal for road accidents, it will be the same for the next decade as they dont care,

An extract from the WHO report...

 

The report said the high toll was a consequence of weak law enforcement in Thailand against drink-driving, helmet wearing for motorcyclists and riders, and seat-belt usage. 

 

Only 51% of motorcycle drivers and 20% of passengers wore safety helmets in the country, while 58% of car drivers and 40% of front-seat passengers fastened their seat belts, 

 

From my recent experience of driving Pattaya - Phuket return, should add  'poor spatial awareness' e.g. repeatedly being required to break at 100 KPH when being cut off by overtaking drivers. Family of four on scooter pulling out in front of me, no helmets, just managed to avoid wiping them out etc.

Yeah, said it before. There is no money to be made from road safety. If you catch drug dealers that's OK.

Most Thai drivers are obsessed with going first ...getting in front ...never mind red traffic lights!

aren't they still really no.1, if they aren't leading in the rate per 100k then at least they are still in the lead on overall numbers, you only have to do a quick population check to see that they are way out in front, hopefully someone in the government will stand up proudly soon and denounce the figures as unreliable and they will claim back their top spot.

The WHO Report is full of informative graphs and charts but it's accuracy is thrown into question. It shows that Thailand has motorcycle helmet laws and car seat belt laws as meeting best practice. The laws might be there but the best practice is certainly missing. 

It should have a global chart showing the country with the most indolent traffic police force and unimaginative and ineffective bureaucracy when it comes to road safety. Both have an indirect impact on the road toll.

I used to think Thais didn't care for the rules, but over time I have concluded that they just simply don't have the first clue about how to drive. What you need to know to get a license here is laughable, and until that improves this place is always going to remain right up there with the worst fatality rate globally.

Rules are only worth something if they are enforced. Thailand has plenty of rules but no enforcement and police only get involved if there is personal gain. Maybe Big Joke can take time from his high profile cases and do something really important - actual law enforcement!

The article differentiates between Nations and Regions.

 

Europe is a Region

 

Australia is a Nation.

 

Denmark (in Europe) has a rate of 4 per 100.

 

A few more low numbers for other European Nations brings the average down, making it the safest Region.

Remembering that the road death statistics recorded are for those who are killed at the accident scene and do not include those who succumb later in hospital...  which could easily double the figure.

As always figures are presented to give the best of a worse outcome !!
