After three years in construction, the Chee Chan Golf Resort welcomed golf journalists from all over Asia yesterday, to experience their latest 18-hole championship course beneath the famous Chee Chan Buddha Mountain, near Pattaya.

As a local journalist and Pattaya resident, it would be fair to say that there had been a lot of gossip and speculation about this new venture, however the good news is this David Dale designed layout is both challenging and stunning.

Chee Chan is one of the first courses in the region to use Zemet Zoysia grass on the tees and fairways to great effect. In addition, their Bermuda Tifeagle greens will provide excellent year-round putting surfaces.

The Big Buddha mountain can be seen as a backdrop on most of the holes, and the course has many elevations, some deep bunkers plus large undulating and fast greens. There are several tee boxes at 7,345 yards from the back tees to 5,406 yards from the red tees.

The large clubhouse overlooking the 18 holes is very impressive, with a well-stocked pro shop, superb locker rooms and a restaurant with panoramic views across the course and onto Pattaya’s skyline. IMG have been appointed to provide golf marketing and operations services to ensure world class standards.

Current 2019 green fee rates for 18 holes are THB4,000 weekdays to THB5,000 for weekends. Caddy and cart is THB1,200. They are pitching Chee Chan as a five-star experience, however on speaking to the management, we understand they will be announcing special rates for residents shortly.

Overall impression is that Chee Chan is a very good addition to the current top end golf resorts in the region.

Interesting they failed to mention the current "soft opening" green fee price of 2,000 baht until the end of December although I understand they are fairly well booked.

The 4k gf price is the same as the December Siam courses walk in price (PSC 3,600) but the cart/caddy fee 100 baht less.

Players'll need the local bus service; I don't think the caddy cars are made for long-haul trips.
