Top Charoen on the corner of Sukhumvit and the slip road that runs alongside Big C South Pattaya have a special of B1950 includes eye checking, frame and lens.  Good selection of frames in that price range.

and mine too, lovely man who speaks good English, a sole trader, no fake prices , deserves custom, i would not think of going anywhere else

Does he actually offer lens prescriptions or do people mostly go in there with a scrip from a doc?

he does his own eye tests with machines and then manually with lenses like the old days

Have you used his service for that and have you been satisfied? Others as well.

There is another well known shop in town that I won't mention where I trusted them for that (they even rejected my doc's scrip, insisting on using theirs) and it ended up being totally wrong.

its not like its a service to pay for , he does it every time i go there unless its a follow up, he does not rely on a visit that may have been some months ago to make new glasses

he has made me glasses specifically for driving, for looking a computer screen with a fixed distance between the glasses and screen, reading glasses and and prescription lenses to my sunglasses

used him lots as has my visiting family members

like i aid i would not dream of going anywhere else

Yes he uses the machine (to get a rough idea ? )  and then you go into the back room for  fine tuning with the  reading chart, heavy special metal lens frame and assortment of incrementing lenses to get the prescription just right for you..if you have your own doctors prescription I'm sure he would get lenses made to those specifications for you..

I go to First Optic to get my replacement lenses done. For this I take a prescription issued by a fully-qualified UK optician. I have never had the slightest problem with my lenses and for me the price is reasonable (450-900B per pair, depending on the finish).

However, on my recommendation a friend had an eye test done at First Optic and had some glasses made by First Optic based on that test. He also had a recent prescription from Europe but the two prescriptions seemed to be very different. This was for progressive lenses and the total cost was around 5000B.
When he actually tried the new glasses made here he found that they were not suited to his vision at all, and when he had them tested on his return to Europe they found that the prescription done here was wrong. He had new lenses made in Europe from the original European prescription and he was happy with those, but they did cost him another 15,000B (equiv). I dont know why he didnt properly test the ones made here when he collected them here, or why he waited until he was back in Europe to wear them all the time.

This friend is not a native English speaker and is not technically minded, so I dont know to what extent he may simply have misunderstood the questions asked by the First Optic guy when he was doing the test. The test does rely extensively on saying whether one adjustment is "better" than another, and also on differentiating between lines that go one way or another. So perhaps not entirely obvious in a foreign language.

Make of the above what you will: I simply dont know what went wrong.

That's very cheap for Thailand, I have been quoted B8k to B12k around Pattaya.

Am getting a new pair of lenses in HCMC next week so will post the price for comparison, I'm expecting it to be around B1,500 max.

I was quoted B20k for no line bifocals with the thin lens type. That's just for the lenses. I had my own frame and prescription.

(I got them made when I went back to the USA instead)

I have used Charoen Optics in Pattaya Klang.

Really nice service, a bit cheaper than UK,

They even used my old frames at my request.

Not sure of my spelling of Charoen.

A great place for people who enjoy being scammed !

Yes, I wondered about that too. I suspect that there may have been some major lack of comprehension on one or both sides.

For a cheap option there's OWNDAYS Japanese brand shop in Central Marina and Terminal 21, they have only their own frame but at fixed price, you shop around for the frame where there's price displayed for a couple of lens option like high index, transition and even progressive or tinted and that's all the price you pay, around 2-3,000 baht and they take you for the eye test,

The appeal is that the price sticker is clearly displayed when browsing, including all the lens option and no need to upsell you to more expensive lenses after the eye exam.

then you pay and they make the lens while you wait, around 30- 45 minutes, you can come back and pick up later while you walk around the mall, no need for weeks of waiting for lens, they always have the lens in stock.

Compared to ubiquitous Top Charoen, the staff operating the eye exam is probably slightly better trained, but the stock of lens and the style of frames offered for the price all under 4000 baht is appealing and with the fixed price concept, going to get a new glasses can be intimidating when you have a budget but the shop insist that you must have this lens and they only have stock of that lens can balloon into very expensive affair

If you're used to expensive glasses and prescription, it doesn't compare of course, but it's good for taking the kids or girlfriend

I have a rare condition on my right eye , a mono double vision.

I don't know if glasses will help, also my right eye can not focus from distance .

Maybe I should just visit First Optics and do a test ?

I've had eye tests in Pattaya (Euro Optics, Pattaya Optical) and would suggest a UK NHS eye test is vastly superior. Retinal imaging, pressure (glaucoma) and peripheral vision all included in the UK test.

Yes, I always get mine done at Boots in the UK. Simply no comparison.

It cant do any harm to ask him though if you have any sort of medical condition you may need more specialist attention than he can provide.

Owndays prices are just ridiculous compared to the only honest shop in Thailand, First optic.

Owndays frames are $1 frames that even Chinese people do not want to wear.

Owndays are perfectly ridiculous, and it's very easy to understand for anybody not totally insane.

Sorry, but prices have plummeted in the UK, far cheaper than Thailand.
