(Reuters) - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect following a dismal start to the season, the Premier League side announced on Tuesday.

United have made their worst start to a league season in 28 years and were beaten 3-1 by arch-rivals Liverpoool on Sunday in what was Mourinho's final match in charge of the club.

"Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect," United said in a statement.

"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

"A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."

United are sixth in the table with 26 points from 17 matches, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Mourinho won the Europa League and the League Cup in the 2016-17 season before guiding the team to second in the league last season and reaching the FA Cup final.

His modus operandi these last few years seems to be to get a new job at a club, perform satisfactorily for 2 years, then in the third year start behaving unreasonably so he's given the sack and a large multi million pound payout. Wash and repeat and count the money.

Let's be fair the idiots who make the transfers happen without Mourinho's knowledge or consent need firing....Di Maria (65M); Sanchez; Pogba (85M) etc etc and we still have Phil Jones in the side and no decent central defenders.

I agree. Listening to Gary Neville saying politely that (1) the owners haven't a clue & (2) the day-to-day Management, especially Woodward, have negatively impacted the club since Ferguson's departure. Mourinho has his faults but when the manager is not given the players for positions that he badly needs to fill, the results are plain to see.

It's Woodward & co that needs sacking. Just look at the current plan: Michael Carrick to be temporary manager for 2 days, then appoint another (more permanent) temporary manager until the end of the season & then find & appoint a permnent manager. What a circus!
