New "Smart Driving License" too smart for the Thai police

Recommended Posts

I would like to see traffic policemen concentrate on ticketing drivers who drive head long into on-coming traffic rather than follow traffic in the left lane until the next U-turn...

A valid drivers license is not of much value after a head-on collision.

Is it actually allowed within Thai law for the police to hold your licence?

And if you aren't licenced to drive / ride?

I have been fined many times and it is always 200 baht. I find it a good way to control traffic. Not too much and a quick way to operate. No paperwork and a good deterant.

I always keep 200 baht in my ash tray.

i don’t know how it works in farang towns, but in the country it’s 200 baht. I use an international drivers licence. Available from AAA in USA.

Why would you need an internet signal?  It's an app on your phone that stores your DL information and a QR code.  You don't need internet.

And a normal DL is still an option.

First thing is first- a piece of Durin fruit can out smart Thai police, second thing I think the Thai cops are not worried about criminals out smarting the system- they are worried that their criminals won’t be smart enough to extort drivers with the new system.

Of cause these police are worried to change the licence system. They will have to back to kindergarten to begin learning to understand what these new words mean.

One would guess the app wouldn’t need 3G/4G to function. QR codes don’t need signal and your license details would be downloaded onto the app at home

Carry your physical license then. No brainer really.

Just to clarify, it states ‘plans to’ do away with conventional licenses.
