No I'm saying its not just the drivers fault,  road conditions play a part in the high accident rate too.

Hmmm.........drive to suit the road conditions was a mantra we were taught when first using a m/bike.

And as an aside I saw the ultimate idiot driving a m/c here 2 days ago...............youngish Thai guy, no helmet, one hand on the handlebar whilst using his iPhone, then taking both hands off to enable him to text, still travelling at about 30-35 kph; all this on a very busy road!

You can't fix stupid.

Hardly anything to do with bad brakes but with:

  • Young kids driving motorcycles
  • Too many people on a motorcycle
  • No (proper) helmets
  • Unqualified drivers
  • Not enough penalties when getting caught braking the rules
  • Too many U-turns

Spot on with the u-turns. They were probably OK when there wasn't so much traffic on the roads but now they are just dangerous, with people taking risks just to get into the flow on the other side, causing a danger to themselves and other drivers.

I'd add the lack of rear and headlights onto your list.

Yes, they export all the bikes with ABS. The Thais are left with all the bikes with less effective hub brakes...

Wait a minute, hubs, hubs? Where have I seen that word before, isn't a "hub" the most desirable thing...

Yes all very well going at 10KPH,  might as well walk ????

how do you tell when a nice bit of road will suddenly turn into  a rutted and pot holed bit ?

how do you tell when there is diesel or sand  on a corner..

how do you tell when a soi dog will run out across your path from behind a rubbish bin on the side of the road

How do you see unlit/signed U-turns on a fast road  at night

(maybe the U-turner has a bag in basket on front of bike or just no lights)

of course if you are local then  you (should) get to know where all the danger points are

doesn't help the non locals....but that what the twig warning barrier is for.

One could hope for a single-vehicle crash.

bad lying by the press and driver irresponsibility to blame.

Doesn't have same ring to it, does it?

Both these responses put the blame where it fits!! To expand, the other elements are poor driving skills, look at training for licence.. Just B/S??? Second, Speed & driver inability to handle bike at speed!! Finally, police do little enforce road laws... seldom stop, charge & convict reckless bike drivers, increase penalties & fines for convictions!!

Correct, and you or any westener will never understand their way of thinking (or is it non-thinking) no matter how long we've stayed in the country. They are just - different.

Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.

Rudyard Kipling was correct.

They are not "just" different.

They have been specifically indoctrinated with an attitude/outlook that is different to the specific indoctrination of Westerners.

To understand look at the origins and structure of their belief system, their "world view" (and your own while you are at it).

Anyone who does not understand how they/we come to be what they/we are has not been paying attention.

Amazing! after five years and therefore ten '7 dangerous days' campaigns, being told all this time that it was drunkenness, speeding and failure to wear helmets that was causing all these deaths. I've now discovered that it's the poor brakes that are to blame.

So they need to do is fix the brakes and it's 'problem solved'. RIGHT, GET TO IT!

IDIOTS!

If this 'it's the lack of proper (ABS) brakes' BS were the case then why wouldn't the death toll be just as high in a number of other comparable nations where the exact same models of motorcycle are used on the roads?

Honestly, 'pass the buck at all costs' is the order of the day in LOS far too often. They can't drive for sh*t; hardly any have a drivers license, understand the simplest forms of road safety and have next to no regard for themselves or other motorists. It's as simple as that, pretending otherwise is simply obfuscation and face-saving. On the bright side, perhaps a wee bit of social-Darwinism is at work here? The most stupid and reckless of them will die out and therefore, with a little luck, the gene-pool should improve some. Here's to hoping anyway...Harsh, but true.

Happy New Year! ????

I've bought about 5 2ndhand bike (clicks, finos, etc) since I've been here.. Everyone of them the breaks have hardly worked.  Seized (both on & off) discs, or badly adjusted cables to the rear, or leaking (empty) hydraulics.

Usually only a few 100 bt to repair/replace, but the Thais don't seem to care.
