My wife and I live in Hua Hin on a quiet street where we built our house and there was a homeless dog we named Sum Lee who started hanging out at our place even when it was being built. She started sleeping here every night and she's been here ever since about a year and a half. We feed her twice a day and we have become quite attached to her. She is very smart and she is a loner; she likes to be alone all day and doesn't need a lot of attention and she doesn't hang out with the other soi dogs. She is also very good security as she barks at any stranger approaching our house when we sleep. She has never bitten anyone before as far as we know. We have 2 young kids here who play with her and she has never bitten any of us. A few days ago she bit 2 different people in one day. First she bit a small boy who was walking past our house to go home after visiting the neighbour boy. Then later in the same day she bit my brother-in-law who was visiting...he went out to the car to get something and she came up behind him and bit him. Both of these bites were unprovoked which worries me. The dog is getting old so we are wondering if she is getting old and senile or has some medical condition that makes her angry. I'm not a dog expert so I don't know what is going on with her. I did notice that she felt ashamed after she bit my brother-in-law. We asked her why she did that and she cowered in shame so she knew it was wrong. This is a terrible experience for us because we love her but we are thinking she has to be put down before she bites someone else. Another option is to find a place for her to live out her days in peace where she will be fed and loved. We can't keep her here because we have no place for her. We have no yard because our house comprises the entire building lot. She currently sleeps on the street in front of our house or on our steps when it rains. If we do nothing we risk her eventually biting someone else so we are feeling responsible to do something since she considers our place her home. Can someone please tell me what are our options? poohy Posted January 3, 2019 Share Posted January 3, 2019 If you want to keep she has to be secure if not she will get poisoned by Thais Vets here wont put her down so moving her to temple is only other option. For what its worth my guard dogs both large and soppy really make a noise but once people (foreigners) are allowed inside they are ok and playful BUT Thais have to be escorted for their safety Thais coming in unannounced would be a big big mistake on their part Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If the dog has been fine until now and then suddenly bites two people in a week, there's a chance that it also has rabies which is starting to become active. If it does they'll put it down anyway, and if it doesn't you can have it vaccinated and eliminate one risk factor for it and your family. Don't know about Hua Hin, but there's a great vet in Thonglor who puts down sick dogs in a very calm and caring manner. wildewillie89 Posted January 4, 2019 Share Posted January 4, 2019 I am curious as to many members comments on vets in Thai not putting dogs down. All the vets I have ever been to have said yes to putting animals down. Maybe it was a thing of the past? Could muzzle the dog but make sure it is the right kind of muzzle. That is, one the dog can pant and drink with (never seen a humane muzzle sold in Thailand - only ones designed to be used for quick vet visits). Otherwise it would be very cruel to have it muzzled all the time. If choose that option the dog would obviously need to go for a full check up at a vet and be treated for parasites if you have kids around it. Re biting the people, you can have the dog put down at the vet and then get the municipality to pick it up and get it sent off to be tested for rabies. Municipality will send it to the vet office in the province, if they cant do the test they will cut the head off and send it to a province that can. The Thai option is to sedate the dog, put it in a sack and dump it at a temple very far away. Just moving the problem on. Probably not an option if this dog is a loner. ChoakMyDee Posted January 4, 2019 Author Share Posted January 4, 2019 So we found a place for her. There is a shelter here in Hua Hin sponsored by the Royal Family. They are coming by in a few days to check her out, vaccinate her, refer her to another agency who will come by and get her when they can. Apparently they are very busy so it isn't a fast process as there is a long list of dogs to be picked up. We had to go down there and fill out paper work telling them why we want her taken away. She will be missed.
