Deportation: smartphone returned?

Recommended Posts

Friend of mine being deported. Was wondering whether she would get her smartphone back. It's not so much the price of a new phone as the contacts. Not sure I can see her at the airport for farewell and give her a copy of my online contact.

Yes she will get her phone back. She will be escorted to the airport, and be in the custody of immigration, or the airline, until she lands at her destination.

In fact I'm rather in favour of her being closely escorted because the wole thing scared the shit out of her and she has become overshy and helpless. She has a stopover in Addis I have a good mind to try and book assistance in Addis with Ethiopian, not that she gets lost in Addis and lands in jail there.

Are you certain regarding the stop over? That would be unusual in the fact a deportation is carried out on your National airline by direct flight. Her passport is held by the flight crew until she reaches her destination.

Many countries do not have a national airline.

And flying direct to many countries is not possible. It often requires changing flights.

Indeed. In this case the home country is Uganda. The repatriation flight is not even to Kampala. It ends in Nairobi. It was booked by IDC Bangkok. I assume they knew what they were doing.

What utter twoddle and nonsensical blustering is this Sir? I fear you have totally misunderstood the situation Sir!

Contacts on a telephone are not automatically stored any where other than the phone they were entered onto. They are only stored on GMail and Google if you use GMail and Google, have an account with them and then

choose to store your contacts on there.

I own a mobile telephone device, although it is not one of these "Smartphones" it is just a phone - It has a large store of my contacts that are half in two places at the same time, one is the telephone memory and the other is the sIM card held within the telephone, none of these contacts has been or ever will be stored on either Google or Gmail! You see, the poor girl just wants her phone back for the same reason, nothing to do with Google or Gmail or the internet of things, just some addresses, names and numbers stored on her phone, smart or otherwise.

Ha. Good luck with your "phone that isn't a smart phone" or any details that you will lose if your phone is ever lost or destroyed. Lesson ...back up your data. Very simple to do.

my idea is that IDC knows close to zilch re air routes

she can take the bus from Nairobi to several places in Uganda

or fly bkk-ist-entebbe or bkk-many airports in middle east-entebbe

If it’s a smartphone say Apple or Samsung you can save the contacts to ICloud, was your friend arrested in operation Black eagle?..

Yeah, it is not even impossible for them to have mistaken one country (one capital city) for another. I understand there are plenty of bus rides from Nairobi to Kampala. Main thing is the airline agrees to carry a deportee to Kenya who is not a Kenyan. Possible hitch here.

Not forgotten, just very intentionally avoided thank you very much.

I'd rather share my contacts with a usb cable than with Mr Cook and the likes.

What's the deal with "not about smart phone its about contacts"

All contacts etc are stored and retrievable via existing accounts. Such as Google/gmail etc. People lose cells on a daily basis.

only if you have set up Google as a back up.... not everyone is so savy.

You, another one, who missed the point... not everyone sets up the accounts... think, just a little, try hard, to think outside your own little box, these a lot more people out there, besides you.

You seem to have missed a few posts (18) or maybe my comment above was too obscure for you?

Am at the airport to see her off and give her some money and some clothes. No one her can tell me where I am supposed to meet her, no one. Is she supposed to turn up at the usual airline check in counter?

Surely she's gonna check in at the airline she's flying with?

You're right she was to have been brought at the check in counter.

They didn't bring her though. Other deportees, all male, were there but not her. The officers could tell me nothing, as usual. Ticket wasted for nothing. Hopeless.

Sorry Jack… There is no way that you will be able to see your friend before she departs.

Normally deportees are transported from the main immigration detention centre in Bangkok the evening before they are due to depart by police van.  The van will enter the airport via a side entrance and the deportees are then escorted straight to the airport detention facility (which is airside) where they will be held until shortly before their flight is ready to start boarding.  Check-in is done by the Immigration Officers.

Once the aircraft is ready to accept passengers your friend will be escorted to the gate and allowed to board the aircraft before the other passengers.  Her passport will be given to the purser who will return it to your friend once she arrives at her destination.

There is no way that they (Immigration) will take deportees to the normal departures check-in area because of the potential risk that an individual may either make a dash for freedom or create a disturbance.

Well there were deportees at the gate. And the idc van was stationed outside. The immigration guards told me to check the van, insisting "no females today, idc closed"

FYI - I have just checked BKK Departures and there are no flights to Addis Ababa today.... the next flight is in the early hours tomorrow = Ethiopian Airlines Flight  ET609 scheduled to depart at 02:00.

As I said in my previous post.... you will not be able to see her as she will be escorted straight to the detention facility in the airport where she will wait until her flight is ready to board.

You're right "today" was misleading since the flight actually departed at 1:15am "tomorrow".

I was at IDC this morning and found out they'd rebooked her on a connection to ENTEBBE next week. So Nairobi was the bug.

I'll be at Suvarnabumi next week. I'll report about the outcome ( and whether seeing her off was possible or not). This is harrowing. If I don't get her out before my April Europe summer break she'll be here for many more months.

Shame on the African consulates washing their hands of their own people.
