Diarrhea for over 6 months

cyril sneer

Recommended Posts

I've been experiencing Diarrhea almost every day for over 6 months

I'd always assumed it was due to mixing spicy food, alcohol and coffee, but i've always done this and was never an issue living here last year

I've recently tried cutting out all 3 and not seeing any change

I have no other symptoms other than (explosive) Diarrhea.

So is it that my body is still in healing mode or could it be something like parasites?

Over 6 months is not right (IMHO).

You should look at exactly what you are eating and try elliminate/replace to see if the issue is diet based.

You also need to ensure your body salts etc are kept to optimum levels if this  Diarrhea is ongoing as that can cause other issues.

You can get sachets from any pharmacy to add to water to ensure these are not depleted and lead to dehydration etc. Its very important to keep fluid levels up (not alchohol)

If the symptoms dont change from diet analysis and substitution, then its time to seek professional medical advice.

Any number of things can cause this, but if you have tried and eliminated/substituted the obvious, then its time to go deeper and get advice from a Doctor.

I drink 4-5 large bottles of water a day so not sure if hydration is the issue

Water actually triggers it first thing in the morning

had same problem last year, went to hospital did gastrointestinal endoscopy and they found bacteria, doctor prescribed antibiotic and some other pills, couple days later felt a big difference and it has been good ever since.... don't wait too long, it's worth the money

Get some reishi mushrooms and make wine. Keep the alcohol content down to about 6% and take a half litre drink every hour for 10 hours. Don't eat or drink anything more either during the programme or after for another 10 hours.

If the problem persists (the alcohol has not killed any bacteria), then boil up the reishi and do the same programme, but alcohol-free.

Report back to TVForum.

That is definitely not right and a trip to a specialist should have been on the cards months ago.

They can test for H Pylori and also take a faecal sample to test that...........go to it.

I'd suggest getting tested for giardia and or cryptosporidia infestation. They should show up in a fecal test. The symptoms you describe are fairly typical.

Amoebic dysentery is another candidate.

Quit kidding yourself - Go to a hospital or clinic with a reputable Doctor.

that's the challenging part

I assume as I have no serious symptoms like pain/blood/vomitting etc. the doctor will just save face and feed me a cocktail of useless meds. that's my usual experience anyway

Nonsense.  Google best hospitals in Asia or Most technologically advanced hospitals in the world.  You get what you pay for.  Go to a good hospital get a good doctor or ask on Thai Visa.

Double check with at least a stool sample, and whatever other checks they want to run.

At a hospital. Then if its nothing its nothing.

Having diarrhea longer than 14 days is serious.

You need to see a specialist right away.  You have to take a battery of tests to be able diagnose your problem properly.

there are many issues that can cause your symptoms. sorry to say there is a very good chance you now have IBS-D caused by exposure to Salmonella bacteria.

I have it and there is no cure.

Also look into the FODMAP diet.

Right you are cyril sneer. Keep away from those quacks. The only thing they will relieve is money from your pocket.

Try my remedies first; as of NOW. No time to dilly-dally. Get yourself sorted.

The three mushrooms that should be a part of any farang's diet here; reishi, maitake and shitake. Also, knock the alcohol* on the head for a week. Cut out cheese and chips.

Stop intaking sodas, caffeine, alcohol*, and sugary, foods. Instead, eat wholemeal bread (if you can get it), fruits (especially apples and papaya) and FRESH vegetables**, fresh grains and healthy fats found in tilapia, snake-heads or frogs. Nuts are better than meat for protein.

Also, it is worth trying (if you have a western toilet) an exercise, while you are on the loo doing your stuff. keep your knees about 15cm apart. Lean slightly forward and put your elbows on the outside of your knees. Now push your legs apart and resist with your upper arms. With a bit of practice, you can train the body to work on the stomach area.

* Except for the initial reishi wine trial.

** A lot of the veg' in Thailand is full of nasties. Grow your own, or get them from a sound source.

Ignore all the home remedy suggestions here and do as some others have said. Go to a good hospital and ask to see GI (Gastro Interology?) specialist. You should have two tests done.

  • Have a fecal/stool sample tested for a bacterial infection (i.e. amoebic dysentery).
  • Have a colonoscopy performed.

Since you've been suffering for a number of months, it may be more serious than just a bacterial infection.

I had diarrhea for about 2-3 months before coming here to Thailand and had the bacterial test done in the US before I left. It came up negative and because my move was already in motion I waited until I got here to Thailand.

I saw and excellent GI specialist at Bumrungrad who did the test again and then performed a colonoscopy on me. It turned out that I had/have Ulcerative Colitis, which is a form of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) the more serious version being Chron's disease. It's an auto-immune disease and with meds and adjustments to my diet it's been held in check.

This can be quite serious as the ulcers/sores can lead to severe scarring which can then lead to cancer. You really need to stop delaying and go to a good hospital/doctor ASAP.

Agreed. Seem my other post about the potential seriousness of this condition. This is no time for trying home-remedies.

I had excellent service at Bumrungrad and Dr. Orapin-Tanapanpanit actually did the pathology on my biopsies. (My colonoscopy and care was provided by https://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Veerakit-Apiratprachasin.

Shitake is good. Try reishi first. Maitake is also good. I think all three are really beneficial to a Thai expat's health.

Are you really being serious about making 6% wine from mushrooms, and drinking 10 x half litre a day. I think not.  LOL

I think the Owl talks BullShitake.

This may make you feel a little better. Don't leave it too long before seeking medical advice. Rooster

Cyril, you don't like visiting the doc's here; I don't like them anywhere but especially Thailand, where many buy their white coats and get their knowledge from facebook. Once some of these white-coat wallers get their mits on you only death or running out of money can help you.

You have had the problem for 6 months. It is most probably an imbalance of bacteria in the gut and it is being fueled by something you are eating/drinking.

Get to the market* today and get the goodies. My remedies should normalise your gut in just a couple of days. Once the problems are sorted, and you are shitting normally, introduce any new foods one at a time.

Learn to read your body. Try to understand what is going on; after all it is you.

* Some of the reishi mushrooms at the markets have been grown in Laos and are generally big (as in 10/15cm across). Avoid these as they could have traces of 'agent orange'. Go for the smaller ones.

Very likely a parasitic infection like guardia or less likely a bacterial infection.

Stool exam would be usual first step not colonoscopy. Colonoscopy only if no cause of diarrhea found on repeat stool exams and cultures.

Some doctors would empirically treat for giardia in a case like this as it can take multiple stool tests to isolate the parasite and treatment is pretty straightfoward.
