Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha on Thursday said Tropical Storm Pabuk’s departure out to sea was partly thanks to him praying for it to go away.

“I prayed every day to Phra Siamdevathiraj,” he said, referring to the country’s supposed guardian angel. “Otherwise, it would have been even more severe. Countries affected by the storm were all harmed. Isn’t it strange that the storm just moved away from our country?”

Pabuk hit the south last week, sparing key beach resorts from major damage.

The storm damaged houses, knocked down power lines, triggered flash floods in several east coast provinces and left one citizen dead. Tens of thousands of villagers and tourists had to be evacuated to shelters.

Prayut made the remarks at the opening ceremony of an exhibition showcasing the junta’s populist Pracharat scheme on Thursday.

He called on voters to make a good choice in the general election and urged everyone to care for the country before saying that Thailand was a holy land and how praying to gods could possibly save it from any harm.

The remarks drew online ridicule. Some say that if prayers work, the government should set up the Ministry of Magic and make Thailand a superpower. Others say that they also pray for the junta to leave politics but it did not work out.

:cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

I thought the UK TV show 'The Comedians' finished years ago!

Look no further, our fearless leader has brought it back, all by himself.

Just now, Misterwhisper said:

Maybe if we all try and pray really, really hard to Phra Siamdevathiraj, he will save us from general Prayuth as well.

OK, so, together now... 1, 2, 3...

I was just going to ask exactly the same thing........:clap2:

If only these ancient fools knew how ignorant stuff like this made them look. On the other hand, there’s probably a large portion of the population who believes him.

You know if it were the other guy (R.I.P.) and he said it, 100% would say it’s the truth.

Even if 50% of them thought it wasn't.

Only problem with this is the next time a ripper of a storm comes Thailand's way believers are gonna want him to do the same and if he can't come up with the goods again then there's a danger of being labelled an ineffectual fake or a chancer who got lucky ..

Oh and is that not a self satisfying smug look he's wearing .. but as history so often proves something ( or someone ) always comes along to wipe the smirk right offa yo' face ..

Obviously Uncle is just being his usual, modest, unassuming self. We all know he can easily tame the forces of nature with a single wave of his hand. But…he downplays his own divinity and allows us to believe he is actual mortal like the rest of us. The heavens surely smiled on Thailand when they sent this miracle worker that we are allowed to call 'Uncle'.
