A POLICEMAN was shot dead yesterday outside his precinct station in Pattani’s Khok Pho district, in posible retaliation for the deaths of two suspected insurgents the day before.

Pol Corporal Chalermpol Khomkham, 32, was manning the sentry box outside Na Pradu police station when six men on three motorcycles opened fire with assault rifles at about noon yesterday.

Several shots were also fired at the police station.

The badly wounded policeman was rushed to a nearby hospital but soon pronounced dead.

More than 20 spent AK-47 cartridges were collected near the sentry box.

The attack, recorded on the police station’s security cameras, came just a day after two suspected insurgents were killed in a gunfight with security forces.

Police said yesterday’s attack could have been revenge for the deaths of the perpetrators’ comrades on Saturday.

In Saturday’s clash in Pattani’s Yaring district, rangers and police exchanged fire with three suspects. One ranger was shot and a stray bullet wounded a local girl.

The firefight began about 5am. Officers ended up in a stand-off with the third suspect, according to Police Captain Kachornsak Kuamanee, deputy inspector at Yaring precinct.

He said about 100 rangers and policemen were deployed around a house in Moo 3, Tambon Talo Kapo, where three suspected insurgents were believed to be hiding. Authorities arrived to be greeted by a hail of gunfire.

The ranger and the girl, Koiru Imbadeesan, 9, were wounded and taken to Pattani Hospital. The gun battle continued throughout the morning.

Kachornsak said two of the suspects were shot dead, while the third kept firing. A local spiritual leader was asked to try and persuade the lone holdout to surrender.

The latest wave of violence in the border provinces began last Thursday when four defence volunteers were shot dead by suspected insurgents armed with assault rifles at a school in Pattani.

really pathetic the way they react, all were probably hiding inside the building so they wouldnt get hurt. They need to start to kill these people no quarter given, put rewards for dead or alive on their heads so locals can make some extra cash. These terrorist are pathetic excuses for men, they simply kill easy victims so they have less chance of being hurt themselves but the thais just pussy foot around them, they need to send in a specialist squad to hunt them down but I doubt they have any that would be suitable or trained enough to do so

I assume this precinct station was full of police while this took place. Put no mention of anyone chasing down the 6 men on little scooters.  Just how fast is a scooter with 2 grown men on it?

Not everyone is a superhero like you and jump in a car, follow the men and drive in a placed bomb!!!

ByeBye ....

What is the answer to the problems in the South? Can anyone give a brief but cogent account of the history of the conflict and some possible solutions?

It's probably Islam related, Muslims got quite a presence in the south. They probably want to create a caliphate in Southern Thailand. See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patani

It’s an insurgency by those who resent the occupation and colonisation of their formally independent country by the Thai state.

Its nationalist based not faith.

Didn't the government say they would fix the problem in the South within 12 months? And wasn't that 2 or 3 years ago?

Yay! Top job Army!

The new Army chief waxes awfully mouthy, but I don't see him down South...

I never realized the south was this bad , just too busy with bad air ,dangerous roads and the daily minutia of life .

The Dragon Airship was a bit of a failure then...

Unless it's main purpose was to enrich the top brass, in which case it did a reasonable job.

I agree, nothing to do with Islam, everything to do with Thailand snatching a sizeable portion of a different country, and not giving it back.
