BANGKOK — Ousted and fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra plays the role of a business, life and development coach in a new podcast that debuted today.

Thaksin, mostly based in Dubai since he was ousted in the 2007 coup, said the program called “Good Money” will seek to be a weekly or bimonthly chat.

Muang Nok obviously suits him, he's looking well fed and still not a white hair on his head!

Excellent observation. My bet is he uses the same hair rinse as Prawit. But I think the Toad is a bit more debonair and uses a bit of gel to keep the wisps in place.

Thaksin returns to limelight with launch weekly podcast

By KAS CHANWANPEN

POLITICAL SCIENTISTS yesterday said the latest move by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to show his vision through a weekly podcast “Good Monday”, could invite comparisons between the Shinawatra and the pro-junta camps ahead of the upcoming election.

The first podcast in the series was launched yesterday and it could also be viewed on Thaksin’s official website thaksinofficial.com.

Thaksin wrote on his Facebook that through the podcast “Good Monday”, he would share with Thai people every Monday morning how to handle changes in the world.

The content will be distilled from his experience of living abroad for 12 years, travelling to many countries both advanced and underdeveloped, as well as meeting numerous political and business leaders, according to the Facebook post.

“Every Monday, when we wake up, we want to know if our way of making a living is still relevant and if we need to change because the world is changing so fast now,” Thaksin wrote. “If the sharing of my experiences can be an inspiration to change how you make a living or raise your kids, I will be very happy.”

In the first episode yesterday, the former PM talked about economic trends this year and the next year that would affect smaller businesses as well as Thai peoples’ quality of life.

The Facebook post garnered nearly 50,000 likes as of press time with over 2,000 comments welcoming the podcast.

His official website, displayed in a minimalist style, features four main pages – Personal, Business, National Policy, and Good Monday. The website presents photo galleries as well as articles showing his personal life and views on different issues.

Following the launch of the podcast, political scientist Sirote Klampaiboon pointed out that Thaksin remained one of the few living Thai ex-PMs who remained popular among a section of Thai people.

“Though some might see him as politically calculating, Thaksin has earned acceptance from the people since he led the now defunct Thai Rak Thai Party in 2001 as a visionary leader,” Sirote wrote on Facebook. “To demonstrate this again in 2019, Thaksin is showing the people the difference between a visionary leader and a short-tempered, narcissistic leader.”

Another political scientist from Rangsit University, Wanwichit Boonprong, also said that Thaksin was showing his superiority via the podcast, and it would lead to people make comparisons between him and the ruling junta and the pro-junta Palang Pracharat Party.

This move will force the pro-junta camp to come out and criticise the former PM, he said. But at the same time, all eyes would also be on Thaksin and his move via his website and the podcast, he added.

Aside from direct competition with the ruling junta, Wanwichit also viewed the launching of the podcast now, with the elections fast approaching, as proof that Thaksin was ready to fight.

If some parties or political groups get involved, Wanwichit said they might risk getting dissolved because the charter prohibits outside influence.

However, another way to look at it is that Thaksin may want the dissolution to happen to add fuel to the fire. He may expect his supporters to take to the streets and fight the ruling junta, Wanwichit observed.

I just hope the Thai populace chooses for a third option, the future forward party. Anyway with choices like they have who would be interested in politics if only means you select the next leech and the benefits to your own life are minimal.

Future Forward is not gong to be a third option. It will be another vote for Thaksin. There will only two camps: pro-junta and pro-Thaksin. The Dems have no choice other than the pro-junta camp and FF has no choice other than go with Pheua Thai and Thai Raksa. Anyway Thanakorn is already starting to display dictatorial tendencies within the party.

Thaksin has already proved that the concept of an ethnic Chinese billionaire going into politics solely to help the Thai poor is a confidence trick. The poor need a genuine Labour Party led by their own people to achieve anything of substance. Nothing worth voting for for them in this line up. Better to invalidate their ballots or stay home.

Indeed. Wonder if his vision is for himself to be a dictator for life whilst his extended family are in all key roles? Just like his eternal friend in Cambodia has achieved.

But at least you get a vote in a kleptocracy, even if the dictator dissolves the opposition and locks their leaders up. A little trick Hun Sen learnt from Mugabe and Maduro.

Anyone who believes this wannabee dictator is remotely interested in real democracy, a just and fair society, and the people are naive at best.

A sad but realistic sum up of the situation.

Thaksin still believes he can con people just like he used to and Yingluck tried to. Same as the Junta try now.

Has Robblok says, the only choice is which leeches do you want next.

Why do you say that? I think there have been huge improvements here post Thaksin, certainly in the Tourist areas. The beaches and walking areas are cleaner, trees planted etc. A crackdown on drunken driving and driving licences etc. Of course the corruption continues and it may take decades to clean up, but at least a start as been made. As a Farang, the politics are way above my head but what I see around me, and that is what counts, is a great improvement.

Do you believe that the current government are any better.

Thaksin apparently stole money.

The current government went one better and stole the country which gave them the opportunity to steal anything they want with impunity.

They have no fear of punishment while they are in power, as they granted themselves immunity for ALL past, present and future actions.

You imagine too much BB. Thailand is only good for one powerful personality and a fully armed institution that will stop any Hun Sen wannabe. Thaksin dictator ambition is as unreal as seeing Elvis alive and kicking. You only using this as a boggie man excuse just like the junta. Ok he is corrupted but dictatorship is foolhardy thinking.
