Officials transported a more than 4-metre-tall giraffe from Dusit Zoo in Bangkok to the Khao Khiao Open Zoo early Tuesday.

The giraffe, called Bin Laden, was put inside a large box aboard a truck and left the now-closed Dusit Zoo at 3am, reaching its destination in Chon Buri at 7am.

The truck was driven on the Bangkok-Chon Buri motorway, with a Highway Police vehicle leading the way to make sure it travelled without any hindrance.

The giraffe was accompanied by Dusit Zoo officials and a team of veterinarians.

Khao Khiao Open Zoo announced that the transportation of the animal had been planned for over a month, and that the route had been carefully chosen as it had no flyovers, given the height of the giraffe.

Bin Laden is a giraffe of the G camelopardalis species, which is different from the G reticulata giraffes kept at the zoo, so it will kept separately from them, Khao Khiao Open Zoo explained.

Giraffes are the last kind of animals being transported from Dusit Zoo following its closure last year.

Bin Laden’s mate currently remains at Dusit Zoo but will be moved to rejoin its partner soon, the Khao Khiao zoo said.

It was lucky Bin Laden didn't die in a road accident. Between 3 am and 7 am is about the time Thai drivers usually go to sleep.
